Three weeks after being violently arrested from his home by Iranian security forces, Saman Yasin is at risk of being sentenced to death. The young Kurdish rapper is accused of “waging war against God” after he supported anti-regime protests sparked by the death of young Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in September.
According to a report by the Kurdish NGO Hengaw, since his arrest in early October, Saman Yasin has been physically and mentally tortured while awaiting trial. Numerous petitions and the hashtag #FreeToomaj have been created to call for his release.
The artist has released several protest songs on topics such as unemployment and the oppression of the people by the government. On his Instagram page, the musician has also repeatedly shown his support for anti-regime protesters.

Mahsa Amini, 22, died on September 16, three days after morality police arrested her in Tehran and charged her with breaking the country’s strict dress code, including requiring her to wear a veil in public.
His death triggered a Wave of protests in Iranviolently repressed, and demonstrations in solidarity with Iranian women, supported by public figures from around the world.
Hundreds of people, mainly protesters but also members of the security forces, were killed during these demonstrations described as “riots” by the authorities. Thousands more, including women, have been arrested.
