Former presenter Jay Leno was badly burned on Sunday after one of his cars caught fire in the garage of his home in Los Angeles, several US media report, including Term.
“I was badly burned,” the 72-year-old former host said in a statement to NBC News, “I’m fine.”
A legendary presenter
Jay Leno, hospitalized in a burn center, adds in the same press release that he needs “one or two weeks to recover.” He had canceled his appearance at an event in Las Vegas on Sunday due to a “medical emergency” that prevented him from traveling, according to People magazine.
The host had taken the lead on the wildly popular “Tonight Show” after Johnny Carson, another American talk show legend. He was particularly known for his introductory monologues in which he joked around with his guests, whether they were political figures or celebrities.
Jay Leno hosted the show for 22 years, before being replaced by comedian Jimmy Fallon in 2014. As a car collector, he also hosted a car show, “Jay Leno’s Garage.”
