George Clooney persists and signs. The American actor, known for his commitment to the Democratic camp, had published in July 2024 a forum in the New York Times asking Joe Biden to retire from the presidential campaign, faced with doubts about his state of health.
A year later, the actor, who was criticized for his text, justifies his decision to challenge the former president of the United States by believing that it was his “civic duty,” he said in an interview with CNN this week.
“I don’t know if I was brave, but it was my civic duty because when I saw that the people of my group were lying (…), I told myself that it was time (intervene),” he said.
“Some people are angry”
The actor is aware of criticism. And accept them: “Some people are angry. It is fine. But the concept of freedom of expression is that you cannot ask for freedom of expression and then say” do not insult me ”.”
“This is the beginning: it must assume their values and then administer the consequences. This is the rule. So, if people criticize me, I must accept it.”
“20 years ago, I was criticized for my words against war (in Iraq). People boycotted my films,” he said. “I accept that, I accept criticism. I defend your right to criticize as I defend my right to criticize them.”
“We need another candidate”
The American actor, very involved in the collection of funds for the Democratic Party, called Joe Biden in July 2024 to retire on a platform published by the New York Times And titled “I like Joe Biden. But we need another candidate.”
“We will not win in November with this president,” the actor wrote. “The only battle that he cannot win is that against time,” he added in front of the doubts about his state of health after a catastrophic debate with Donald Trump.
“In the last four years, he has won many of the battles he had to face,” admitted the actor before adding: “Joe Biden is a hero, he saved democracy in 2020. We need to save her again in 2024”.
Joe Biden had moved away from the campaign. His vice president Kamala Harris had been chosen by the Democratic Party to replace him, but had to bow last November against Donald Trump, who was invested president last January.
