An international organization after Paris? The socialist mayor of the capital, Anne Hidalgo, plans to request the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees, when she completed her mandate in 2026, according to the Information of the Tribune on Sunday, April 20.
The weekly specifies that Anne Hidalgo benefits from Emmanuel Macron’s support in his project and that the president supported his candidacy.
The United Nations High Commissioner position for refugees is currently occupied by Filippo Italiano that has grown since 2016. His mandate ends on December 31. While the municipal elections must be held in March 2026, Anne Hidalgo will leave his position before the end of his mandate or should he ask for a United Nations period?
Although he had announced in 2024 that he did not want to request a third mandate, and after collecting only 1.74% of the votes in the first round of the presidential elections in 2022, the question of the socialist future of the socialist was still unknown.
