Eurovision 2025: How the Swedish composer Thomas G: His wrote more than 100 songs for Eurovision

This Swedish composer has become a figure in the shadow of competition by multiplying contributions for more than 25 years.

Eurovision fans contain breathing: more than one day before the grand final of the 2025 harvest, which is celebrated in the Swiss city of Basel. Betting corridors bet on a victory in Sweden and their delusional Bara Bastu BaraKaj trio, and predicts a good third place for France thanks to Mother From Louane. Among the candidates of this 69th edition, the singer Parg will defend Armenia with the title Survivor. A song co -written by a name that fans know well: Thomas G: Son.

Anyone who follows Eurovision has already heard one of his compositions. Maybe ten. Maybe even one hundred; Since his first collaboration in the competition, this Swedish singer and composer has written 117 titles for competition or its national teams. The delegations from about fifteen countries, from Denmark to Poland through Spain, requested their services. And two of his songs won the victory.

“It’s a long adventure,” jokes the 57 -year -old artist with BFMTV.com, 26 years after his first contribution. “But it’s a great adventure. Until now, I have fun.”

Thanks to a television spot

It is by chance that Thomas G: son, born Thomas Gustafsson, in the Swedish city of Skövde in 1968, put a finger on the machine of the largest viewer on the planet. In 1999, the young musician thirty met a television place that asked the composers to offer titles for melodifestive. This Swedish television competition, a true national institution, chooses the country’s candidate for Eurovision every year.

“I wrote some songs, I recorded them, I produced, I did everything alone, I recorded them in a CD and sent them by publication,” he recalls. “Later, they announced the selected songs in a program. I was sitting in front of television and … ‘Oh! It’s my song!'”

Natten är min vänInterpreted by a singer named Cleo Nilsson, he finished eighth in melodifestivalen. The second attempt will be correct: two years later, Thomas G: His co -written the song Listen to your heartFor the group of friends. She won the competition, which is worth defending her country in Eurovision 2001 in Copenhagen. And to climb in the Top 5.

A consensual pop title, which evokes the Abba tubes, a thousand leagues of the author’s favorite. Because the Hard Rock shook him that Thomas G: his grew: “The first time I heard Van Halen surprised me,” he recalls. “And I learned the guitar.”

It was also a career of guitarist who had the intention for a long time: “It was my goal, I touched the guitar all the time, took it as a shirt.” In the early 1990s, he secured the strings of the Swedish group of Hard Rock Masquerade.

An essential of each edition

But once in the Eurovision circuit, Thomas G: His has not left it: every year since 2001, he wrote one or more songs of the Swedish preselection. But also Norwegian, Danish, Finn and Spanish pre -elections … to the Eurovision scene: to date, 17 of his songs have participated in the competition, for nine different countries. Of which France: co -written My allyInterpreted by Tom Leeb, who had to represent Hexagon during the 2020 edition before it was canceled due to COVID-19.

“I don’t know how it happened,” he laughs. “Sometimes it is a delegation that requests me, a manager, the artist himself … differs every time.”

Your compass? HE fun: “Party in projects that I find interesting and fun. If you look fun, jump on it. Otherwise, I would say no. If it is original, new … I do what I consider interesting and pleasant.”

At the crossroads of European cultures

How to succeed in finding inspiration, after more than twenty years working in the same competition? “Eurovision is not a particular sound. There is hard rock, all kinds of music. And I like to write for different music styles.” In addition, “each country has its own tastes, their own music, they like different things and think differently.”

“I don’t write for competition but for artists,” he adds. “Of course, there is a goal in mind: we want to win, we want to represent a country, but above all we write for an artist and his country.”

And this goal, Thomas G: His reached twice: in 2012 and 2023, every time for Sweden, co-writing the songs Euphoria AND Tattoo Of singer Loreen. The strongest memories of all its participations:

“We remember forever. First in Baku with ‘Euphoria’, and two years ago. They are great memories. But almost every time I have been there, they were good memories.”

The 2025 edition can offer you a new one with the song Armenia. It will probably not be your best result: two days before the competition, Survivor It arrives in the last position of the classification of the betting corridors. Because in Eurovision, there is no formula: “It is a mystery every time.”
