Believe it or not, Lucifans, but it’s been nearly a year since the series finale premiered on Netflix in September 2021. Lucifer survived a cancellation of network television and so I also got a bonus season just when it looked like the streamer was ending the story with Season 5. Now, executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich reflect on how the beloved series ended and what they hoped to achieve with it.
With LuciferWith the sixth and final season on DVD and Blu-ray on September 13th, there has never been a better time to prepare for a rewatch of the villainous series finale. Although Lucifer and Chloe tried to make sure she didn’t disappear from the life of their time-traveling daughter before she was born, Lucifer found him calling her, and that was what meant he couldn’t be with them. Though he and Chloe eventually reunited, Rory still spent her childhood without her father.
There was a happy ending … eventually, with a little bit of pain along the way. When executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich met with Gossipify to celebrate the upcoming DVD / Blu-ray release, Henderson shared his thoughts on the series finale:
I think it’s bittersweet, but also one of the things I love about Rory and Chloe’s relationship that we’ve been trying so hard to talk about over the course of the season is that Chloe was a great mother and that Rory loved him. They had a very strong bond, like when she talks about her wings and how they reflect her mother in a positive way, how proud she is of the person she has become. One of the things I really loved about the message of our show and our season is that it wasn’t a tragedy that happened. It was a shame, it’s difficult. Families sometimes end up being separated.
Even though Rory’s time travel didn’t change the past and ensured her a childhood with both parents, she decided for herself that Lucifer should follow her calling. The bond between mother and daughter was also very strong, which made their final scene together even more touching. Henderson continued:
To some extent, we were really trying to embrace that metaphor of, yes, it’s hard, but they love each other and are sacrificing for each other. Plus, this era made Chloe and Rory strong and unique. It’s something Rory, once embarked on this journey, realizes he doesn’t want to lose. He loves the person he has become and he loves the person his mother helped her become.
If Rory were to change her past, then she wouldn’t be the person she has become having only been raised by her mother. You may have missed having a father, but as Joe Henderson said, history is not a tragedy. It’s not all happy, but it’s not hopeless for Rory and Chloe either.
Lucifer himself learned a similar lesson at the end of season six, and it’s hard to imagine that season one Lucifer would even consider becoming a healer of hell. Ildy Modrovich shared his thoughts on his peculiar ending and how Lucifer The team found their calling by explaining why they would miss Rory’s childhood:
At first we started talking about how Lucifer is primarily a matter of redemption, but I think as we went we realized that it was about accepting yin from yang, the lateral darkness of ourselves and the fact that if you go through something you go through the inconveniences, the challenges of life, make you who you are. And you won’t want to take them off. So Lucifer, as angry as he was, eventually realized that being in hell gave him a unique perspective on the fact that he was actually a superpower. I could help other people. If you understand what it means to fall and stand up, you could help others find that path too. So was Rory. He was the strong person that he was and she realized: “You can’t change that, because it would change who I am.” And I like. I hope it was a good message. [laughs] We think so.
It was certainly a message that tied the loose ends in season six and explained why Lucifer was an absent father without defaming him or creating a tragedy that would fall on him and stop him from being with Chloe and his daughter. Of course, that also meant that there was no magic wand that would allow Lucifer and Chloe to build the perfect family together, which may not have been what some fans expected. Joe Henderson acknowledged knowing that this was a breakthrough that may not immediately receive universal approval, saying:
We knew we were choosing an ending that could be divisive and we went through many iterations. I have had many conversations and many with Tom. [Ellis] also, as well. But we also felt like we wanted one that honors what the show is about and who the characters are. I think bittersweet is a good word to describe it, because we get our ending, we get our happiness, but it takes some time. And I think it’s life up to a point. It was nice to be able to reflect that.
It was after considering many options and having conversations with star Tom Ellis that the Lucifer The team chose what ultimately became the final episode of the series. It wasn’t a fairytale ending, but it brought the character full circle and said goodbye to all the key players. even one he had been dead for a long time !
So how did you decide on the endings of all the characters, who were in such different places in their lives? Ildy Modrovich explained:
I feel like the thought is, how can we have no endings but beginnings? How do we place them in their new chapter so that they feel that wave of hope for each other? She opened this STEM group for young children and Dan met Charlotte in the sky and Maze and Eve traveling on their bounty hunting adventures, and Amenadiel as God and Linda who are writing her book.
Although Lucifer was out of the miraculous bonus seasons at the end of season six, the finale didn’t end with the idea that these characters’ travels were over just because netflix subscribers will not be able to see. Although the showrunners joked with me about the idea of a surprise seventh season about dinosaurs oa Lucifer versus the dinosaurs film, the final product stands alone. Joe Henderson elaborated with his thoughts:
We really wanted people to imagine these adventures continuing, because we imagine them to continue, and for me that’s part of the fun of television. These characters will live on in your minds and hearts, if you do your job well.
I think it is safe to say that the Lucifer the showrunners did their job well, as last season was a wild ride that ended with a thoughtful and emotional ending (and a hilarious greeting to Bone towards the end of the course ). Lucifer it also reached the top of the streaming chart throughout 2021 (and Comic book creator Neil Gaiman had a pretty good reaction. ).
