The royal family will certainly appreciate it. The human rights organization, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, will present an award on December 6 in New York to Meghan and Harry for their commitment against “structural racism” within the British monarchy.
The award will be presented by Kerry Kennedy, one of the eleven children of Robert Kennedy, President John Kennedy’s younger brother, also assassinated five years after his brother in 1968.
In an interview with the Spanish media The confidentialKerry Kennedy thus salutes the “courage” of the princely couple, who faced “the oldest institution in the history of the United Kingdom.”
“They were told what they were doing wrong, that there could be no structural racism within the institution, that they could not sustain a lack of understanding of mental health,” the statement from Robert Kennedy’s daughter continues.
“They knew that if they did, there would be consequences, that they would be ostracized, that they would lose their family, their position within that structure, and that people would blame them for it. […] I think they were heroic to do that.”
The Sussexes spoke at length about the racism suffered by Meghan Markle when she lived in the UK, within the royal family, during the interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. In particular, she mentioned the reservations of a member of the royal family about the skin color of her unborn child, when she was pregnant with Archie.
devastating interview
Following this devastating interview, the royal family denied being racist. Buckingham Palace said in a statement that it takes “the issues raised, particularly those related to race” “very seriously” and is considering ways to address them.
After this interview, voices were raised to salute the “courage” of Meghan and Harry, including that of the former first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.
Harry and Meghan will receive an award dubbed the “Ripple of Hope Award”, an award that celebrates the commitment to social change and equity of “exemplary leaders”. The couple must attend the ceremony.
President Volodymyr Zelensky will also receive an award during this gala evening hosted by Alec Baldwin.
Previous winners of the award Meghan and Harry will receive include Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and South African human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
“What the hell have they done to deserve this? What percentage of Harry and Meghan’s fortune goes to worthy causes?” exclaimed journalist and Kennedy family biographer David Nasaw on Good Morning Britain on Monday.
