“It’s hard to escape”: with Oasis and Britpop, the return return of the 1990s

The return of Oasis is not the only event in the rebirth of the 1990s to the United Kingdom. Several Britpop groups are back, not to mention fashion.

An air of the 1990s floats this summer in the United Kingdom: Oasis and Pulp, emblematic groups of the Britpop, return at the top of the lists and fill the concert halls, at the bottom of nostalgia for a “great” period.

The shelves of the brands and the Spencer stores give the impression of having jumps 30 years ago: the shirts with the oasis logo are back. They are also in Urban Outfitter, a precious teenager and young adults. “Oasis, Live Forever” (“Live Forever”), is it written in a short top, in tribute to a group song?

On Instagram and Tiktok, young people are filmed or dressed in Liam and Noel Gallagher.

The reform of the group, 16 years after the resonant divorce of the Gallagher brothers, awakens an immense enthusiasm of fans.

Tourning tickets in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which began on July 4 in Cardiff, were snatched at the end of August.

Liam and Noel Gallagher are not the only ones who return.

In pulp concerts, the public does not keep when the first notes of Common peopleTube launched in 1995. For the first time in 27 years, this group returned to Las Sales in June with its new album Further. And made a surprise appearance at the Glastonbury Festival this weekend.

Suede, another Britpop band, will release an album in September. Supergrass is on tour this summer to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its first album.

Everything that is missing is the enemies of Oasis, blurred. But Wembley have already completed in July 2023.

“Everyone seemed happier

How to explain such resurgence? “Everyone loves birthdays,” says Glenn Fosbraey, an academic from the Faculty of Winchester, specialized in popular music.

1995 was “a great year for music”, especially with the launch of the Oasis album (What is the story) Morning Glory? This 42 -year -old teacher estimates who grew up with Britpop.

“It is a good opportunity to revive our youth, but also say this period to the next generation,” as he does with his teenage daughter.

In recent years, he has noticed that his students have placed Oasis among their favorite groups.

Glenn Fosbraey was a blur fan. You will not see oasis in concert, but the pulp has not been lost.

He observed a nostalgia for the second part of the 1990s, a period known in the United Kingdom under the name of “Cool Britannia”, marked by a cultural, artistic and political rebirth.

In 1996, England reached the semifinals in Euro Football, organized on its ground. In 1997, work Tony Blair came to power, carried by a wave of optimism. All with the Britpop in the soundtrack. “Everyone seemed happier,” recalls Glenn Fosbraey.

This nostalgia for the 1990s not only affects Quadras, but also to the Z generation, the young people born between 1997 and 2012, added James Hannam, from Solent University to Southampton. They perceive these years as “less stressful” when “they grow in a difficult period, with climate change, several wars.”

This music teacher in the music industry has already noticed for several years with his students a fashion return of the 90s, with the baggy jeans and the “cubes hats”, the bobs, a need for Liam Gallagher when he was at the top of glory.

Several James Hannam students will go to the Oasis concert.

“Both the young and the elderly love the honesty of the Gallagher brothers in an interview. They said shocking things,” it is difficult to imagine with today’s stars and their “media training,” observes James Hannam.

Julie Whiteman, marketing teacher at the University of Birmingham, was 20 years old in 1995 and was never a fan of Oasis.

She noticed a return of the 1990s: “It is difficult to escape from him.” But there is no nostalgia on his part: “It was a fairly misogynist and intolerant period. (…) There was little space to express themselves for women, for those who belonged to an ethnic minority, or those who were not heterosexual,” she says.

“It wasn’t just a great moment,” he said. “It was a complicated moment, as are all time.”
