“Personal and innovative cinema”
This great mastery in action scenes, which converted the best Hollywood actors of the time, such as Pacino, Tom Cruise, Russel Crowe or Robert De Niro, was illustrated in the thriller, the biographical film, the political or historical film.
“Conjugating the requirement of an author for the pleasure of the public,” Michael Mann “embodies a personal and innovative cinema through his subjects, his staging approach, narration and aesthetics,” said the press release of the Lumière festival. And this, even if it means working in “real independence and sometimes a certain loneliness.”
The filmmaker is also the author of several episodes of the series, such as Two police officers in Miami (1984-1990), of which he was the showrunner, Chicago incorruptible (1987) or, more recently, Tokyo vice (2022).
Created by Thierry Frémaux, the distinction celebrates a personality for all its filmography and the way it is part of the history of cinema. This honorary award, therefore, celebrates, this time again, a Hollywood personality after rewarding Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola.
