Tim Allen is known for various roles, from his time as Mike Baxter to the last man standing give the floor to Buzz Lightyear in toy story movies (and even made a kid cry once while doing it). But as the holiday season rolls around each year, Allen gets renewed attention for playing Scott Calvin, aka Santa Claus, in Santa Claus movie. However, 2022 is a special occasion on that front, as Allen takes over as Santa Santa clauses, a limited series that you can stream with a Disney+ membership. As such, Allen has been looking back on his past lately. Santa Claus he walks out, and it turns out there’s a plot hole in the first film that’s been bugging him all along.
In the context of Santa clauses promotional circuit, Tim Allen went through The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk to the host about the title of his latest project. But thinking back to 1994 Santa Claus, Allen noted that after Scott Calvin unexpectedly takes over the role of Santa Claus on that fateful Christmas night, it’s unusual for anyone to actually acknowledge what happened to the previous Santa Claus. Allen explained:
I never understood, not even in the movie, why the elves, when I showed up at the North Pole, didn’t say, “Hey, what happened to the other one? You know, I’ll get on the sled with the boy and let’s go. No one ever asks, ‘Where is… Does Mrs. Claus know that the other boy is dead?’ There were huge holes… So we created this scenario, Les Pères Noël. Now I have a family. They end up doing all of that, filling the holes in all of that.
For those who haven’t seen Santa Claus at one point, Scott Calvin surprised the former Santa after he and his son Charlie heard the Jolly Man in Red on the roof, kicking him out of the house. Minutes later, the old Santa’s body is missing, and with some conviction from Charlie, Scott has agreed to turn over the rest of the toys to the children of the world, setting him on the path to becoming the new Santa. However, Tim Allen is right: the elves are not only surprisingly cool with Scott arriving at the North Pole in place of the previous Santa, but as requested Santa Claus 2 What does Santa have to do to have a Mrs. Claus by his side, what happened to the other boy’s wife? Sure, all of this could be thrown away with the convenience of Christmas magic, but it leaves a few holes, as Allen said.
Warning: MINOR SPOILERS for Santa clauses I’m ahead!
However, as Tim Allen said, Santa clauses it works to fix some, if not all, of these plot holes. In this case, it is revealed in the show that the former Santa did not die from the fall of him, but returned to his original civilian life. It is further stated that the fall itself was not an accident, but something predestined to happen. This would explain why the elves weren’t surprised by the appearance of a new Santa, and once the old Santa returned to his old life, perhaps Mrs. Claus followed suit. In the case of Scott Calvin in Santa clauseshe’s decided to retire in the most conventional way and needs to specifically select his successor, and it looks like Kat Penn’s Simon Choksi could be the man for the job.
Santa clauses It has three episodes and has thus far enjoyed a better critical reception than it did in 2006. Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause won, although there are a lot of thoughts to ponder watching these initial episodes. The remaining episodes of the show drop every Wednesday through December 14 and Santa Claus Movies are also available to watch on Disney+.
