Marvel’s veil of secrecy is both admirable and frustrating, especially when it comes to delivering news. Usually things are kept under wraps, but then there are times where the actors are left speechless about their status in the MCU. This is what happened when Spider-Man: There’s No Going HomeAlfred Molina followed in the footsteps of his co-star Tom Holland. Molina accidentally confirmed the news that he would be returning to the franchise as Doctor Octopus after first playing the role in 2004. spider man 2. Confirming those months of speculation was a reward for fans, but a headache for the studio. After opening his mouth, Molina recalled the hot water he got into with Sony and Marvel.
One year after the monumental success of no way homeMolina was promoting his new television series, three pineswith radio schedules when the topic came up. The Emmy nominated actor was asked if he would play Doc Ock again. But this time, he kept his lips pursed as he reminisced about his early days in the MCU.
This is the official line. I ran into some issues in the latest iteration because I let the cat out of the bag innocently enough. I was casually talking to a reporter who said, “So, you know, how’s the Spider-Man movie going?” And I said, ‘Oh great, thanks.’ Then literally the next day, Variety said, “Alfred Molina reveals Doc Ock is back.”
Making headlines has been a double-edged sword for the actor. He answered a long-standing question about Spider-Man: No Way Home, a film that we now know is especially important to the multiverse saga. Along with Molina’s return as a brilliant scientist, there were rumors of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, with the latter coy about the rumours. The strategy of him followed the MCU protocol while the Frida Star didn’t get the reminder. Though she did reveal his return, seeing him with Foxx, Dafoe, and other Spidey villains in the film was a huge payoff.
While fans were thrilled with the reveal, Sony and Marvel weren’t so thrilled. Molina recalled how Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal reacted when she spoke to Variety. She even called it a moment Marvel’s big boss called him after the secret was out.
And I’ve had so many problems. He was getting calls from Amy Pascal, Kevin Feige was on the red carpet somewhere and someone asked him about a Marvel movie and he apparently got a little cheeky and turned around and said, “Ask Alfred Molina.” Then, I went to hot water. So this is the official line: I can neither confirm nor deny.
Looks like someone learned their lesson the first time around. For now, fans will have to wait and see if Molina will return as Doc Ock in another one Spiderman movie. Naturally, Sony and Marvel are continuing their partnership with other films featuring the Web-Slinger. Not only is the film and TV actor’s involvement in question, as whether Holland will return as Peter Parker is still up in the air.
