The German Minister of Culture punished the calls on Saturday, September 19, called from several European countries to the boycott of the next edition of the Eurovision of the song that is participating if Israel.
“Eurovision has been founded to bring nations closer to music. Exclude Israel today goes against this fundamental idea and transforming a party of understanding among peoples into a court,” the Wolfram Weimer’s statement, after the passage in Austria, a host country that had already lamented Boicot calls on Thursday.
Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland and the Netherlands have announced that they would not send a representative in the competition in Vienna next May, if Israel is authorized to participate.
Other countries such as Belgium, Sweden and Finland also think of a boycott. They have until December to decide.
“Eurovision is based on the principle that artists are judged by their art and not for their nationality. The culture of cancellation is not the solution: the solution is diversity and cohesion,” added the conservative minister.
“It is precisely because Eurovision was born from the ruins of war that should not become an exclusion scene,” he continued.
Eurovision is actually regularly the geopolitical opposition scene. Russia was excluded after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Bélarus was a year before after the disputed re -election of President Alexandre Loukachenko.
Due to his historical responsibility for the extermination of six million Jews during World War II, Germany is with the United States one of Israel’s greatest supporters.
