Doctors to Queen Elizabeth II, 96, are “concerned” about her condition and “have recommended that she be placed under medical supervision” at her Balmoral Castle in Scotland, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday.
“Following further assessment this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended that she remain under medical supervision. The Queen continues to feel comfortable and remains at Balmoral,” the palace said in a brief statement.
An announcement that comes after several weeks of testing for the sovereign, who now has more difficulty moving. Since a night in hospital nearly a year ago for unspecified examinations, the queen, in failing health, shows herself more and more rarely.
Smiling, but leaning on a cane.
The Queen formalized last Tuesday the appointment of Liz Truss as Prime Minister, her 15th head of government in 70 years of reign. She had decided to stay at Balmoral rather than return to London, where her transition usually takes place, due to her health problems.
Images released by the palace showed the sovereign smiling and leaning on a cane, shaking hands with the new ruler.
However, on Wednesday night, the palace announced that the queen had postponed a videoconference meeting, as her doctors had advised her to rest. She and she had given up going to a folk festival in Scotland.
Brief appearance at the Jubilee
At the beginning of June, the British had celebrated for four days the 70 years of the reign of Elizabeth II, who is the longest-serving monarch in the world. She was largely absent from this platinum jubilee, appearing only twice briefly on the Buckingham Palace balcony in front of tens of thousands of people.
A few weeks later, however, he appeared several times in Scotland, smiling and carrying a cane, during an armed forces parade in Edinburgh in late June.
Isabel II has been delegating an increasing part of her functions for months to his son Charleswho in particular delivered in his place for the first time the speech from the throne in Parliament, one of his essential constitutional functions.
