A 24-hour medical team

Since Elizabeth II contracted Covid-19 in February, her health has been closely watched, not only by her bridesmaids, but also by her royal doctors.

As the British media point out The TelegraphThe royal family has a team of caretakers made up mainly of doctors and surgeons who are on call 24 hours a day.

This team is led by the Queen’s physician, Sir Huw Thomas. The 64-year-old British gastroenterologist, specializing in the molecular genetics of colorectal cancer, has worked at the Royal Medical House for 16 years and took on the lead role in 2014.

“Being the doctor of the Queen is a great honor and a very pleasant and rewarding role”, confided in an interview granted to Imperial College London who was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, during the New Year of 2021.

In an emergency, the medical house can also call in other specialists if necessary, and sometimes uses the facilities of the private King Edward VII hospital when members of the royal family need additional treatment. Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne and Prince Philip have already been treated there.
