Their posters are legends in themselves. The American designer Drew Struzan, author of the postersIndiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future, ET, The Empire Strikes Back, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone either sword hunterHe died on Monday at the age of 78. The one who retired in 2008 had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that Drew Struzan left this world on October 13,” his manager wrote on the illustrator’s official Instagram account.
Already in March, his wife, Dylan Struzan, wrote on Facebook that his health was deteriorating: “Drew can no longer paint or sign for you. He is not enjoying a well-deserved retirement, but he is fighting for his survival.”
Drew Struzan began his career signing album covers, notably for the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, Alice Cooper, Earth, Wind & Fire, Liberace and Black Sabbath. Then, in the 1970s, he began creating movie posters by hand.
But the designer was very glad not to choose his favorite poster: “If I had one, I would have already done my best. I would lose my spark of creativity. My favorite is always the next one,” he replied.
“Drew created popular works of art,” said Steven Spielberg, reported by Variety. “His posters made many of our films must-see destinations… and the memory of those films and how old we were when we saw them always comes back to the surface just by looking at his iconic photorealistic images. With his personal and inventive style, no one drew like Drew.”
Guillermo del Toro responded: “The world has lost a brilliant man, a genius communicator and an outstanding artist. I have lost a friend: my dear Drew.”
