King Charles prays at Manchester synagogue, target of terrorist attack

The British monarch visited the Heaton Park Hebrew Synagogue on Monday, October 20, in support of the Jewish community. Two weeks earlier, two men were killed in a terrorist attack during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

At Heaton Park Hebrew Synagogue, in Crumpsall, Greater Manchester, flowers, words and candles were placed along the fences. A tribute to the two men who were victims of the terrorist attack that occurred on October 2 in front of this place of worship.

Accompanied by Rabbi Daniel Walker, King Charles III toured the place of worship to mark his solidarity with the Jewish community this Monday, October 20.

The attack took place during the Yom Kippur holiday. The attacker, a 35-year-old British man of Syrian origin, drove his car into the faithful gathered in front of the synagogue and then continued his knife attack. Wearing a fake explosive belt, he attempted to enter the building before armed police shot him dead. During his attack, he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Two men lost their lives there. Melvin Cravitz, a 66-year-old father of three, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were hit by police fire as they tried to stop the attacker from entering the place of worship.

“Deeply shocked and saddened”

This visit occurs just over two weeks after the attack. The following day, King Charles III and Queen Camilla reacted in a press release, saying they were “deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the horrific attack in Manchester, particularly on such an important day for the Jewish community.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this terrible incident.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the attacker had attacked “Jews because they are Jews” and “attacked Britain for (its) values.” He went to the scene the day after the attack.
