We know that Alexandre Astier is a perfectionist, one of those who likes to refine his works and control them until the end. While the first part of the second part of the comic adventures of King Arthur was released in theaters on October 22, the director – also a screenwriter, editor, producer, composer and actor in the saga – assured Première that he would like to release a long version of the first part soon.
The latter, which lasts exactly two hours, was released in July 2021, at the end of the confinement. But, according to Alexandre Astier, it was actually a “special version of Covid”. He explains: “[Celle-ci] “They had to be less than two hours because the theaters hadn’t been working for I don’t know how long, and they needed five shows a day, because the entire industry was in trouble.”
Therefore, Alexandre Astier agreed to cut his film during editing: “That was perhaps what had to be done. But this version is missing a quarter of an hour and twenty minutes, compared to the version I liked.” And he adds: “I don’t know if I was right or wrong when cutting, I shot myself a little in the foot, that leaves me with a little regret. So there will be another version…”
“A little indigestible like that”
Will it be released soon? The interested party remains evasive, but the desire seems tenacious. “It all depends on what it will cost in post-production, because it almost exists,” he explains. “I had it before Covid, but we have to finalize the special effects and everything. So it’s not far from being ready, but I still want to go over it, I still want to go back, I still want to be sure of my shot. In fact, there are one or two scenes missing.”
Alexandre Astier thinks even more and would very much like to update the initial version: “You still understand the film as it is today, but that way it’s a bit indigestible. And that bothers me. So I’m going to have to take the time to fix that. Ultimately, I’d like to be able to replace the existing version with this one, even if it’s difficult to move things when they’re already in progress.”
For now, Kaamelott – Part Two, Part 12 hours and 19 minutes long, it has obtained just over 452,000 viewers in its first five days, according to CBO, of which 86,000 in the preview. A quite satisfactory result in a rather gloomy context for movie theaters, but far from the million admissions achieved by the first part of kaamelott in 2021.
