Many legacy sequels have hit the Disney+ platform in recent months. The TV show 2022 has been particularly active in this area, as two fan-favorite franchises have been relaunched through limited series: Santa clauses and now Willow. While creators Jon Kasdan and Michelle Rejwan are proud of their place in the streaming lineup, it seems they have ambitions to bring this long-dormant world to theaters.
It was obvious when I spoke to Kasdan and Rejwan during Disney+ (opens in a new tab) print day for Willow recent debut in the series. At the time of our interview, they had just come off a theatrical screening of the first two episodes in London the night before. Riding this wave of joy, Jon Kasdan shared this vision for the future of Willow with Gossipify:
We are big supporters of [screening streaming series], and one thing that we’re both fantasizing about the future of this whole thing that we’re in is that there might be a chance that the train goes a little the other way. Sometimes these series can result in theater experiences that you have to see in a theatre. I think Benioff and Weiss wanted that with Game of Thrones. I think there are many opportunities to do that. We would like that to happen. I also think of Disney, finally.
Quite judiciously, invoking the names of David Benioff and DB Weiss recalls when game of Thrones hosted incredibly popular IMAX screenings of the last two episodes of the fourth season. Based on the comments made earlier, Kasdan might suggest so Willow could get similar treatment, with the final episodes of this season hitting theaters at some point.
Sure, it’s a reading of what we’ve seen before. It’s been 34 years since Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley defeated evil in the name of their daughter Elora Danan, Willow loyalists are waiting to see what comes next. If this new Disney+ series is popular enough, there’s certainly room for the films to carry over to future seasons, just like the plan Stephen King intended to deliver. the dark tower to life, until JJ Abrams left the project . What the Willow problem is filled with characters and actors that people will want to see more of, creating a couple of unique epic adventures wouldn’t be too impossible a task.
While Michelle Rejwan and Jon Kasdan went on to explain what they would like to see Willow proceeds, the two executive producers then put together a case for another theatrical film. Ever thankful for the season of episodes they were able to piece together, Rejwan connected the dots of broadcast and theater as follows, with Kasdan sharing his perspective:

There are so many other creative opportunities that he’s given us throughout the eight chapters, and just amazing, endless imaginative ideas coming from my friend Jon here, that we’ve been able to do in just one season. So that’s great.
- Jon Kasdan: “But both Michelle and I come from the world of cinema. I am counting the days Avatars Turns out, I’m a fan of the cineplex. Willow It was a very formative cinematic experience for me, because it was so big and epic.
Earlier this year, we saw Disney use a theatrical revival of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story promote the launch of Andor, attaching footage from the show with Diego Luna to these special screenings. With a crossroads already established between the theatrical and audiovisual worlds of Disney, who knows Willow Can’t you make the leap to the big screen again?
