Warning: There are spoilers ahead of time for the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power.
The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power finally made it to Amazon Prime after several million dollars, lots of publicity, and nearly five years after its announcement. Although the series is set thousands of years before JRR Tolkien the Lord of the Rings novels and does not share the same universe as Peter Jackson’s films, viewers come up with detailed theories about the identity of The Stranger, which it arrived in Middle-earth via a meteorite . This “meteor man” is portrayed by Daniel Weyman , but viewers can only guess who he really is. And there are already many hypotheses!
The Stranger arrived towards the end of the first episode, at a time when was teased in the trailer . Eagle-eyed viewers who saw the previews knew this Meteor Man was coming, but at this point they have no more information of Nori the Harfoot. He doesn’t seem to speak a recognizable language or know how to eat Harfoot-style snails, he appears to have elemental powers and mostly was unable to communicate before manipulating fireflies into a constellation to show Nori and her friend Poppy. .
The magic moment with the fireflies turned slightly sour when those fireflies died quickly after he was done with them, but the first two episodes (that they both went out the same night ) creates a rather epic mystery with this stranger. In the hours following the premiere, fans got a lot of theories, from some of the biggest names of all the Lord of the Rings mediates some relatively darker figures in Tolkien’s lore. The most popular hypothesis? Gandalf.

Gandalf is perhaps the best known and most iconic character in the series the Lord of the Rings movies and books, so it makes sense as a hypothesis of the mysterious unknown. I felt Gandalf’s vibes myself when he started talking to fireflies, which was reminiscent of a scene of Gandalf talking to a moth in Peter Jackson. Fellowship of the Ring, although the show and the films are separate. another manifesto On Twitter noticed some specific similarities:
The stranger is 100% Gandalf His appearance, those deep and wise eyes, the way he treats animals, the sign reminiscent of the one on Bilbo’s door As well as the person he meets, a Brandyfoot, a direct ancestor of Merry Brandybock
That said, yes power rings sticking to Tolkien’s lore, the timeline may not work for this mysterious character to be an early version of Gandalf. One person recognized the parallels but pointed to a problem:
Everything about the meteorite / stranger man screams Olorin / Gandalf, but he won’t reach Middle-earth until Sauron is defeated. Who is? 🤔🤔🤔 # ThePowerRingsSeptember 2, 2022
Gandalf is not the only known emblematic figure of the the Lord of the Rings universe, and some viewers already believe that Sauron is the one who emerged from the meteor crater rather than someone good. The Stranger has already caused a lot of trouble for Nori and the Harfoots, but is he really Sauron himself? One person acknowledged that the theory is a bit far-fetched:
My crazy theory is that the meteorite man is Sauron. Making him look like Gandalf-y (even making friends with proto-hobbits) is a fake.September 2, 2022
Other person On Twitter he found the knowledge to support the idea that The Stranger might be Sauron, but he also dismissed it as unlikely in light of the timeline of events in Tolkien’s source material. They wrote:
As for the meteor man … I’m still not sure who I think he is … there are things that point to Sauron (he manipulates an elven blacksmith to make the rings in Tolkien’s lore, but I don’t think that’s him .. because Sauron disguised himself as an Elf to do this manipulation.
Another theory that seems to have a lot of support is that Daniel Weyman is Tom Bombadil, a well-known character in The Fellowship of the Ring novel but did not make the cut in the Peter Jackson adaptation. He is a mysterious character who interacted with the hobbits in the book, so obviously he’s considered a candidate for that. power rings character:
Call him now: The Stranger (Meteor Man) is Tom BombadilSeptember 2, 2022
For another person on Twitter, there are two possibilities: Tom Bombadil and Radagast. In Tolkien’s writings, Radagast is a wizard known as Radagast the Brown, and he would power rings to introduce a magician without exaggerating and including Gandalf:
Meteor man is radagast or Tom Bombadil and I will not consider any other opinion at this time.September 2, 2022
Of course, there’s always the possibility that The Stranger could turn out to be a completely original character whose name no one might know at this point, but I doubt it. would do power rings Did they bother to refer to him in promotional material as “The Stranger” if there isn’t a big reveal about his identity?
For now, we can just wait and see what happens to Daniel Weyman’s character. new episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power release for Subscribe Amazon Prime Fridays at 12pm ET on Amazon in TV program 2022 .
