Six months after Johnny Depp won a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, the latter is appealing the decision.
the actress ofaquaman, 36, filed his appeal earlier this month hoping to overturn the jury’s verdict ordering him to pay Johnny Depp $10 million. The comedian accused him of defamation for an article in the Washington Post published in 2018 in which he claimed to have been a victim of “domestic violence”.
Documents excluded from the file
In their 68-page appeal, Amber Heard’s lawyers notably challenge the judge’s decision to have excluded certain evidence from the file, including notes from therapists that they say document their client’s allegations of abuse.
They also allege that the trial should have taken place in California, where the couple lived together, and not in Virginia, where the Washington Post hosts your servers.
“The trial court wrongly prevented the jury from considering several separate cases in which Amber Heard reported abuse by Johnny Depp to a medical professional,” the actress’s lawyers wrote in their appeal, dated Nov. 23.
Therefore, the actress’s lawyers are calling for the jury’s verdict on Amber Heard to be overturned, either by Johnny Depp dropping the charges, or by retrial.
Depp’s return
Johnny Depp, for his part, filed his own appeal in this case. During the trial, the star of Pirates of the Caribbean also ordered to pay $2 million in damages to Amber Heard for defaming one of her lawyers in the daily mail in 2020.
The latter had estimated in the newspaper columns that the allegations of sexual violence by Amber Heard were a “montage”. Johnny Depp later stated that the sentence handed down was “wrong”.
If during this highly publicized trial Johnny Depp’s lawyers claimed that Amber Heard’s accusations had greatly damaged the actor’s career, however, for six months he managed to rehabilitate his image.
“The jury’s favorable verdict on the three defamatory statements alleged in his complaint fully vindicated Johnny Depp and restored his reputation,” the actor’s attorneys wrote in their court filing, which was filed in a Virginia court this fall.
Introduced last November at Rihanna’s Savage Fenty show, Johnny Depp produced an album this summer with artist Jeff Beck, will make a Modigliani biopic and will soon star in Maïwen’s next film as Louis XV.
