“God save the King” officially sung for the first time tonight

The lyrics of the British national anthem change with the death of Elizabeth II. At St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, for the first time in 70 years, “God save the King” will be sung.

This is an important change for the British: that of their anthem. With the death of Elizabeth II and the accession of King Charles III, the lyrics of the national anthem must change from “God save the Queen” to “God save the King”.

And according to the British outlet Sky News, the first official performance will be sung tonight at St. Paul’s Cathedral, at the end of the Queen’s memorial service.

The British have already sung the anthem when Charles III arrived at Buckingham

Earlier in the day, the crowd took over this new version of the British anthem as Charles III arrived at Buckingham Palace. Members of the Royal Family are not expected to attend tonight’s service, but Liz Truss and the chief ministers will be there, along with 2,000 people.

The new king is due to deliver his first official speech to the nation this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. French time. He will then be proclaimed king tomorrow, after a succession council meeting at St James’s Palace.
