‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ Tops 2023 Golden Globe Nominations

The Golden Globes, which return to television next year after scandals that cost them their reputation, have just revealed the nominees for this 80th edition.

Nominated in eight categories, the film The Banshees of Inisherin dominated the nominations for the Golden Globes on Monday, which are trying to break away from the scandals of lack of diversity, sexism and corruption that have destroyed their prestige.

The gritty Irish comedy’s lead actor, Colin Farrell, and its director, Martin McDonagh, are on the shortlist, while the feature film will compete for Best Comedy of the Year at the ceremony on January 10.

serious competitors

With six nominations, the surreal comedy Everything everywhere at once, where Michelle Yeoh plays a mother overwhelmed by paperwork and daily hassles, suddenly immersed in parallel universes, she will be a serious competitor. the film Babylon on the golden age of Hollywood and intimacy The Fabelmans Steven Spielberg’s also earned five nominations each.

Avatar: The Path of Watersequel-event ofAvatar Directed by James Cameron, it is nominated in the categories Best Dramatic Film and Best Director. Elvis, Baz Luhrmann’s outrageous biopic about the life of the king of rock ‘n’ roll Elvis Presley, earned three nominations: Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Austin Butler and Best Director. The full list of nominations has been posted on the organization’s official website.

But more than the nominees, it is the attitude of Hollywood’s elite towards the Golden Globes that will be the focus of all the attention for this 80th ceremony. Because these awards, which open the film awards season in the United States and traditionally the most followed after the Oscars, they have lost much of their luster due to multiple scandals.

Boycott

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which makes up its jury, has been in turmoil since revelations in early 2021 about its questionable practices. Faced with accusations of racism, sexism and corruption, all of Hollywood distanced itself during the last ceremony in January. The Golden Globes were then delivered without an audience or television, and were only announced on Twitter.

But after carefully pursued reforms, the HFPA hopes to break the rut. Its storied partner, the NBC channel, has agreed to rebroadcast the ceremony from 2023. It remains to be seen if the nominated stars are ready to dub this comeback.

Appointed Monday for his role as an obese teacher and homebound in The whaleActor Brendan Fraser announced that he would boycott the ceremony.

“It’s because of the history I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise me as a hypocrite,” the actor recently told ‘GQ’ magazine, accusing the former HFPA president of sexually assaulting him in 2003.

The former leader in question, Philip Berk, who denies the allegation, was fired from the organization for calling “Black Lives Matter” a “hateful racist movement.”

On Monday, another protester, Tom Cruise, who had returned his three Golden Globes, was snubbed by the HFPA in his nominations, despite his must-have performance in Top Gun: Maverick, which was a box office success. However, the film was nominated in two categories.

reforms

In the face of controversy, the organization has remarkably renewed its membership, including 103 new members. The Golden Globes jury is now made up of 52% women and 51.5% people belonging to ethnic minorities. The HFPA also prohibited its members from accepting lavish gifts and fully-expense-paid hotel stays from studios seeking their voices.

“It’s really not the old HFPA anymore,” its president, Helen Hoehne, told The Hollywood Reporter. “I respect Brendan Fraser’s decision. (…) And personally, I sincerely hope there is a way that we can move forward and win back Mr. Fraser’s trust, as well as the trust of the entire audiovisual industry,” she added.

But in Hollywood, some remain skeptical. In July, the HFPA, which is a non-profit association, announced that it would hand over the organization of the Golden Globes to a company created by American billionaire Todd Boehly. The terms of this agreement provide for the payment of an annual salary to HFPA members.
