Warning: BIG SPOILERS Coming for Episode 3 (“The Intention Craft”) and Episode 4 (“Lyra and Her Death”) of its dark materialsthird season.
its dark materials It’s officially halfway through the third and final season, and Lyra and Will’s mission to find Roger in the land of the dead has already cost them dearly. Even after winning a victory by persuading Iorek to repair the all-important Subtle Knife in “The Intention Craft,” the price of entering the land of the dead was separation from his demons, which meant leaving Pantalaimon behind. . . I didn’t even know I had it. Dafne Keen, who plays Lyra, told Gossipify how this loss will continue to affect them and the impact of Kit Connor’s performance as Pan.
How Lyra lost Pantalaimon
But let’s start with what happened! Maybe even the fans who don’t have it Read Philip Pullman the amber telescope before fitting I could have guessed that something tragic would happen in an episode called “Lyra and Her Death,” but ultimately discovering her death wasn’t what caused the immeasurable pain. Lyra and Will learned from the ferryman that it was the only way to the land of the dead that demons couldn’t cross, and Lyra had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to Pan (in the voice of the heart stops‘s Kit Connor) while Will tried to convince the ferryman to break the rules.
Though Pan desperately tries to dissuade her, a tearful Lyra boards the ship with Will…and without her demon. The episode ended with Lyra screaming in pain as they parted ways, Pan standing on the edge of the dock as she collapsed into Will’s arms. Fans have seen what can happen when the inhabitants of Lyra’s world are forcibly separated from their demons; She always seemed aware of her surroundings too when she was hurting, but that doesn’t mean she won’t change.
Dafne Keen shares her thoughts on Lyra’s decision and teaming up with Kit Connor
So as we head into the second half of the season with an exciting two episodes a week, how will losing that bond with Pan in the land of the dead affect Lyra? And how will Will be affected, since the ferryman said he too would lose something, even without a visible demon like Lyra’s? Is it a pain they will continue to manage or will they overcome the initial pain as if they were tearing off a bandage? Daphne Keen replied:
The idea is that they feel the separation all the time until they find each other again. They can feel the attraction. It was a very, very fun scene to shoot. I got to do it with Kit Connor, who’s a brilliant, brilliant actor, so it was a huge honor. Also a nice boy. Really lovely guy.
While Pan and Lyra’s parting certainly wasn’t fun for either character, Dafne Keen revealed it was a “really, really fun” scene for her as an actress. Of course, viewers can expect to continue to see the effects of the separation on Lyra, and feeling a tug might be the last thing she needs in the land of the dead. Interestingly, “Lyra and Her Death” gave Keen the opportunity to work with Kit Connor for the first time.
Connor was the voice of Pantalaimon from the beginning, before becoming a big name in streaming thanks to Netflix. the heart stopsWhat’s wrong it was renewed for a second season . That said, prior to Season 3 and Lyra and Pan’s parting scene, the actor had never been on set to work with Daphne Keen. He confirmed it was his first time and explained how her performance on set affected her in the pivotal scene:
It was really, really helpful, actually… [Many times] they said, ‘We’re going to bring Kit to set’ and they never brought Kit to set… I went to the producers and said, ‘If Kit isn’t that day, I don’t know what. make of myself. I’ll probably make a really bad scene.
I think fans can agree that he certainly didn’t stage a bad scene during the break between Lyra and Pantalaimon. Though Kit Connor didn’t appear on screen as Pan, his voice acting was heartbreaking as Lyra’s demon was faced with a sense of betrayal that she willingly left him with no guarantee of return.
At this point, it’s almost hard to imagine what their reunion might be like, assuming Pan thinks it might happen. No one but Lyra and Will seem certain they will return from the land of the dead. readers of the amber telescope get an idea of what will happen after the split, even if the show is already over changes in a traumatic event for Will so nothing is guaranteed.
Of course, Lyra’s separation from Pan (and yet the trip will affect Will) is only part of the larger conflict in Season 3, with Asriel preparing to start a war with the Authority and a relationship with Ms. Coulter. more and more complicated . Still, there’s a reason the executive producers wanted to wait for Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson to be older for a while. more “adult” stories for Lyra and Will so be sure to stay tuned!
