Three states of India have banned a cough syrup after death in two months of at least nine children who had received this product, contaminated by a toxic substance, we learned on the Sunday of the authorities.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the tests carried out in the laboratory in the syrup swallowed by the victims, all over 5 years, revealed the presence of glycol diethylene (DEG), a deadly substance even at low doses.
“The analyzed samples contained amounts of Deg greater than the eligible standards,” the ministry said in a statement published on Saturday.
All products of the company prohibited for sale
The criminal syrup lot was manufactured by the Indian company Sresan Pharma in one of its factories in the state of Tamil Nadu.
“The sale of this syrup was prohibited throughout Madhya Pradesh,” said Mohan Yadav, the chief of the Executive of this state, where the greatest number of victims was identified.
“The other products manufactured by the company have also been prohibited,” he added.
Already involved in 2022
The authorities of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan also suspended the sale of this syrup, according to the press.
The Toux syrups made in India have been incriminated in recent years in several suspicious deaths related to their consumption worldwide.
In 2022, they were involved in the death of more than 70 children in Gambia, in northwest Africa.
