the serpent queen it will soon be previewed on Starz to tell the story of Caterina de ‘Medici, who from humble origins in Italy has grown to become Queen of France. Although set in the 16th century, the series with Samantha Morton and Liv Hill is a different kind of drama than the royal period, as the poisonous queen of the court turns out to be the main character, seeking revenge. According to showrunners and Liv Hill, the show was also incredibly lucky to be able to recreate Catherine’s world in such a rich way for the screen.
In telling the often twisted story of Catherine’s life and rise, the serpent queen he had to create an opulent world for all the intrigues, manipulations and deceptions that the French court had to offer in its day. After her noticeably less affluent start in Italy, the French court and locals transform young Catherine (played by Liv Hill) into the woman who becomes queen (played by Samantha Morton). from The walking dead celebrity ).
When Hill spoke to Gossipify about the series, he talked about the filming in the real places where Caterina de ‘Medici herself lived and walked, saying:
It was a moment of “pinch me” because you get to work and do the scenes in front of the castles. [in France], and we went to see them and stayed at nearby hotels. Then, when we went to Italy to shoot five days, we were the first to shoot at the Palais des Papes. So it was great. This was probably the highlight for me. I’ve never been to such luxurious places before, and I probably never would have if I wasn’t an actress.
The Palais des Papes is, as the name suggests, the official residence of the Pope of the Catholic Church (which will be interpreted in the serpent queen for game of Thrones formerly Charles Dance ), and there’s a reason the interiors of the current historic place haven’t been featured on TV shows and movies before.
The new Starz series was able to make history by filming at the Palais des Papes, as well as in the main French locations. So filming in these centuries-old historic locations meant there were rules on what they could and couldn’t do while they were there? Liv Hill shared:
I am certainly thinking of the Palais des Papes. I mean, I was never explicitly told “don’t touch”, but I knew I was probably going to have security issues. [laughs] But knowing that these were the buildings where the story really happened, especially in France and at the chateau of Chambord. It was truly wonderful and how lucky we were.
The queen of snakes The crew had the chance to shoot in these places to build the world of Caterina de ‘Medici, whose story in the series truly deserves all the breadth and grandeur it can achieve. According to showrunners Erwin Stoff and Justin Haythe, timing was actually a big part of why they were able to pick up their cameras and act in places where the story was made. Stoff, who also served as an executive producer on shows such as oriental witches Yes Giuliasharing:
The funny thing is that, as difficult as it was to shoot during COVID, COVID was actually very positive for us. Because all these places were places that no one had ever photographed … because they are usually overrun with tourists. So because of COVID there were no tourists and they were in dire need of money. So we were able to walk around in the bedrooms, in the corridors, in the gardens, where Catherine lived. So it was actually an incredible stroke of luck for us and for the show.
Even if the COVID pandemic meant numerous production interruptions in the entertainment industry since the beginning, the serpent queen the production was, as Stoff put it, “incredibly lucky” to be able to book rooms that would otherwise not have been available. The trailers only show that the show doesn’t appear to have been filmed with any kind of restriction, so the production managed to completely hide the pandemic by making the most of its unprecedented access to historic locations.
Justin Haythe, who he also created, wrote and directed for the serpent queenshe agreed with her co-showrunner and explained how much the locations added to how they told Catherine’s story:
He added a lot. I mean, you take these really human modern portraits of these people and put them in the real world, and you see the importance of that. Ornament. I mean, it’s absurd. It’s completely over the top, but having real people walking around and like Erwin said, there were times when we had these places to ourselves. I mean, it was great.
What better way to immerse the viewer in history than to film the episodes directly in the places where Caterina de ‘Medici and her contemporaries lived in the 16th century? the serpent queen It also unfolds in a way that costume drama fans wouldn’t expect, as the main character tells his story and breaks the fourth wall. This show certainly doesn’t tell the story of Queen Catherine like becomes Elizabeth said the future Queen Elizabeth Tudor and the locations helped create a sense of realism. Shared Stoff:
Once you are in those places, and the places are real, you give the actors the freedom to be very real, very contemporary and to breathe human beings because the buildings are so amazing around them.
