Warning: important spoilers coming up for the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power I’m ahead.
The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power has finally arrived, nearly five years after its first announcement as in development for Amazon Prime. While the streamer schedules the weekly releases as a schedule for The boys, the first two episodes were released together on the first night in a special time slot. After seeing it, I feel comfortable saying that this special version was the smartest way to give power rings the best possible start.
There were elements of power rings which was easy enough to predict: lots of tradition, great cinematography (for which Amazon would pay a large sum of money ), and many different races that share Middle-earth. In fact, for most of the first episode, I found myself thinking the show was exactly what I expected, with lots of footage from the trailer. (Although I admit I was very wrong in assuming that people wielding swords around fire they were men who would be corrupted by their rings to become Nazgul . In fact, they were Elves.)
Having exactly what I expected and not much more, the story from the first episode didn’t catch my eye, especially compared to HBO’s. dragon house, a rival fantasy series that has surprised me many times already despite knowing the source material. The first episode wasn’t too strong from a story point of view, although it was visually impressive. Episode 2, however, upped the ante, exceeding my expectations for Episode 1 and venturing into uncharted territory that left me wishing I could start Episode 3 right away. (Other widely agreed reviewers enjoying the first two episodes as a couple .)
By releasing the first two episodes instead of the more predictable first, Amazon gave power rings a good start. The trailers told me that Galadriel would end up in the water, many characters would see the meteor fall and on that meteor there would be a man. Their No tell me that orcs would dig themselves into the earth to plunder villages, or that Elrond would have such specific ties to the dwarves of Khazad-dûm, or that Meteor Man could talk to fireflies, among only three of the developments.
I certainly didn’t know that I would be encouraging more scenes of Galadriel and Halbrand after their common near-death experience, and I don’t know what will happen next for them, even though they have apparently been saved. The first episode seemed to be based on characters that fans of LOTR books and / or films can recognize and expose through a narrative rich in stories. There was more to show than to say in episode 2, and the whole time I was glad I decided to watch both of them quickly.
And I was able to watch the second right after the first at a decent hour thanks to Amazon launching those first two earlier than usual for a streaming service in the evening. As an Eastern Time Zone resident, my options for new streaming releases are usually 1) stay up until 3:00 to watch, 2) get up early and watch, or 3) delay viewing and risk everyone in one time zone most convenient time. The rest of the episodes will also air before Netflix’s release at 3:00 EST / 12:00 PST, as all from Episode 3 to the October finale will air at 12:00 EST / 21:00 PST. So the moment was a success for me personally!
Amazon has moved away from the way streaming services typically release new episodes and shows, and it has The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power a strong version that is more likely to keep me awake until midnight to watch next week. It probably wouldn’t have been like this from the start if he’d only watched Episode 1 at a less convenient time. Amazon’s flexibility to go against the streaming norm has worked well for me at least and I’ll be curious to see if the company will release numbers to reveal how many people have tuned in soon.

Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, he anticipated what he knows about future seasons so it looks like there will be a lot to iron out as season 1 continues.
