all fans of titanic James Cameron’s surely had this debate while watching the movie: Would Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) have had the place to join Rose (Kate Winslet) at the wooden gate transformed into a makeshift raft?
In full promotion ofAvatar: The Path of WaterJames Cameron put an end to all debate by explaining to the newspaper toronto sun that he commissioned a “scientific study” to prove that two people could not have survived on that door.
“We wanted to put an end to all these speculations. We did a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie,” James Cameron specifies.
The director adds that this experience was filmed and will be the subject of a documentary, which will be broadcast in February when the restored version of titanic in theaters to let fans keep going.
“Jack Had to Die”
James Cameron specifies that during this experiment, two specialists of the same body weight as Kate Winslet and Léonardo DiCaprio were covered with sensors and then submerged in ice water.
“We did tests to see if they could have survived by various methods and the answer was that there was no chance that both could have survived. Only one could survive”, assures the filmmaker.
According to James Cameron, Jack’s death was necessary to reinforce the almost mythical love story between his character and Rose’s. “Jack had to die,” says the director.
And to add: “It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice. Maybe after 25 years, I’ll finally have no more to answer this question.”
