From its conception, The Handmaid’s Tale was one of Hulu’s most successful original shows obtain Some Emmys nod along the way . I had the privilege of watching the first two episodes of the fifth season (both directed by Elisabeth Moss) while attending the Toronto International Film Festival and the way the premiere handled Bledel’s release was really a gimmick.
Lot of The Handmaid’s Tale The fifth season premiere focuses on the aftermath of the wild cliffhanger ending of the season 4 finale . Namely, June, Emily, and the other Gilead survivors kill Fred Waterford with their bare hands. While audiences will see how Elisabeth Olsen’s protagonist handles this act, the episode also reveals that Emily left Toronto and returned to Gilead after Waterford was rescued in no man’s land. To be clear: it’s not because she missed being a maid, but because she apparently has become even more bloodthirsty and she is looking for other people like Aunt Lydia.
The way this news spreads is with a quick line of dialogue between June and the other Gilead survivors. This really disappointed me for years at first, because I thought the show was unceremoniously canceling one of the most popular characters without giving him a proper greeting. But luckily for me (and my fellow fans), there was more to come with Alexis Bledel’s farewell to the raw apocalyptic series.

It remains to be seen how big the hole in which Alexis Bledel’s absence will be The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5. The Hulu original has always been an ensemble series, where characters like Emily would be absent for episodes at a time. However, it’s hard to see such a beloved OG character walk away without one final scene.
