Avatar: the path of water is finally here, and many of the original’s stars are on board, including Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. One alumnus of the franchise that some probably didn’t expect to get involved in the proceedings is Sigourney Weaver, who played the now-deceased Dr. Grace Augustine in the first film. At the moment, Weaver plays Kiri, the adopted daughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri. . Interestingly, the veteran actress had one main concern when it came to taking on the role and she revealed how it was ultimately resolved.
Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated sequel, director/co-writer James Cameron shines a light on intimacy relationship between the two characters by Sigourney Weaver . Kiri was born from Grace’s avatar, although the details of the design are still a bit fuzzy, especially which of her is the father of her. Weaver sat down with Gossipify’s Sean O’Connell to talk about his work the path of the water and explained how his new role came to fruition:
Well, I knew Jim [Cameron] and we know each other in 2010 and we remember and discuss the idea of creating a character that will be linked to Grace Augustine but that was his own person, his own spirit, someone who feels more comfortable in the natural world than with people, all these things. And so they cooked inside me for a while, and when he sent me the four scripts, which he sent to all of us at once, I was so excited about what he created: the family, the worlds, the menace and Kiri and his friend Spider, the human boy, have such a special relationship, and Kiri has such a special relationship.
Sigourney Weaver once said it James Cameron cast her as a 14-year-old girl because he believed she was “immature” enough to be successful. The 73-year-old Hollywood veteran said he loves embodying that youthful energy. Later in the interview, Weaver talked about her approach to her role, also speaking about the main concern she had while preparing her:
So my only concern once I read it was that I started rebuilding myself at 14 based on my harrowing memories of being that age. The only concern I had was my voice and I took a few classes at LaGuardia High School for that age range. And what I’ve found is that there is such a range. Some kids talk like kids, some kids talk like adults. Girls and boys, they are everywhere. So I let Kiri have the voice that she has, and I checked in with Jim from time to time, and he was very happy. So it was, you know… I had to realize a few things and lean on them before I got on set to just let myself go and be that age. But we kept getting put off, so I had plenty of time to do it.
congratulations to Extraterrestrial icon to work to make sure he was able to create Kiri effectively, and anyone who has seen the film probably knows that he nailed the role. As she noted, babies can have a variety of voices, so there was definitely room for her to experiment with different vocal tones. The actress also overcame a number of other challenges to prepare for playing her. For instance, he followed a freediving course with the rest of the cast. You talk about commitment.
Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron are sure to continue adding new layers to Kiri, as the actress is set to reprise the role in the handful of Avatars sequel coming. We can’t help but be curious as to what awaits the inquisitive young Na’vi. However, no matter how things play out for her, I’m confident Weaver will continue to bring this character to life beautifully without any worries.
