Warning: spoilers ahead for the when Christmas was young movies on CBS.
Karen David came to CBS to star in her first Christmas movie and when Christmas was young I have seen the previous one Galavant Star offering as an actress and singer. She played Melody Douglass, a talented singer-songwriter who had given up on her Nashville dreams after never getting the break she deserved, opposite Tyler Hilton as music manager Luke Dawson, who grew from arrogantly serious during his meeting with melody. . David spoke to Gossipify about what he liked about playing her character and how “lucky” Melody had a happy ending in more ways than one with Luke.
Melody and Luke didn’t get off to the best possible start after making a bad first impression and then starting pestering her for the rights to her Christmas song, obviously called “When Christmas Was Young” and written in real life by no one else. . as Sheryl Crow, for country superstar Lindsay Wyatt to perform at her Christmas concert. It didn’t help that she had one more reason to resent him that he wasn’t even aware of: she had tried to meet him as a potential manager before giving up on dreams of her and losing her. her mother, only to be ignored and eventually become her last resort when Lindsay overheard her song by accident after losing almost everything.
Luckily, Melody wasn’t one to let bad memories spoil the magic of the holidays, and sparks flew with Luke as he showed his true (much softer) colors and even bonded with his daughter Bailey. Sure, something went wrong before they could get their happy ending, but Melody was able to jump-start her music career by dueting “When Christmas Was Young” with Lindsay at the concert and sealing the night with a kiss with Luke.
Karen David (who first tried playing country music during when Christmas was young) opened up with his thoughts on Luke’s persistence and what he loved about Melody’s reactions when he tried to talk her down:
She recalls her experience when she first tried to meet him as a manager years ago. It was before he had his family, before he had his daughter. That’s when she was really chasing his dreams about him, and she didn’t even look. I was kind of naive, which I can relate to in the beginning, when you start this journey, you’re like, ‘Oh, I want to sing, I want to write songs. Well, what do we do? We go to a record company and we show up and we’re like, hey, sign me? So there’s a little bit of that, but it’s part of the learning experience, and it’s part of Melody’s journey.
Melody’s life could have taken many different directions if Luke had had a real encounter with her all those years ago. She built a solid life for herself and her daughter after being dumped by her ex-husband, but she never got the break she deserved… as even Luke had to admit when she finally did. heard her song about her. Karen David continued:
She remembers Luke’s personality very well and he was known as the trending music director, and it went to her head. He was a little full of himself. So I think for her at this point, when you’re Melody and you’ve been through so much (she’s a single mom, husband left the family), that in itself is trauma. She then she loses her mother of hers. She’s been through the worst of the worst! So your tolerance for, shall we say, BS is very minimal.
Luke didn’t make any headway with Melody until he slowly but surely let go of her BS, starting with helping spread holiday cheer and even throwing her and Bailey a nice dinner, all the while easing the incessant requests for the rights to your song. It was clear that the song was too personal for her to abandon just because she would make a lot of money, and it would take her most of the movie to figure out what she had been through. Karen David shared what she found funny in the beginning about her character, as well as how she has changed:
So what I like about Melody is that we see a very bold Melody in the beginning. She doesn’t care who’s about her, and it’s just what’s about her, and I like that about her. She is very grounded. She is very real. She knows who she is, so anyone who enters her space other than the one she will call out to him. And she is not afraid of it. I think it’s something Luke isn’t used to, [is] They told me! And he’s not used to someone punishing him like that. But I love the dynamic between the two and how it evolves.
Melody went through a lot to get to the point where she could be bold and punished, what she needed to defend herself until she found the right reason to let Lindsay sing her song, and what Luke needed to realize certain truths . the same. The duo that started when Christmas was young as an extremely misfit couple who came together at the end to deliver a classic happy holiday movie ending.
And while Christmas romance movies can usually be counted on to end on a happy note, and often with a kiss (Amanda Kloots loves that ending to suitable for christmas and Liza Lapira sharing what changed at the end of must love christmas‘ big kiss), Melody didn’t just score a romantic victory. She also scored a career win by showing the world her talents with the duo while staying true to herself. Karen David weighed in on Melody to get her the win in more ways than one, saying:
It’s always when you’re not looking for something and you don’t expect something like this to happen. It’s funny when chance comes into play and how it plays such a big part in the trajectory of our lives. There are things we don’t even think about, but maybe that’s the magic of life, and how wonderful things can happen to good people. Here’s a song and a demo he sent years ago that somehow ends up in that pile of CDs in Luke Dawson’s box when he leaves the office and how [it’s] suitable place [and] good weather, and you never know. I am so happy that a good person like Melody was able to shine and had her moment to shine.
Serendipity was certainly there to unite the music director and singer who once dreamed of a career in music! If Luke had heard her song and signed it all those years ago, Melody might never have had Bailey and built the strong ties with her friends and family that she had in when Christmas was young, but still made his dreams come true. If Luke had hired Melody, he might have had another star besides Lindsay as a client. Melody was finally ready for her big movie break and was up for her challenge when she got her surprise of her life on stage. Karen David continued:
He doesn’t expect to go on stage to sing at all. So when Lindsay Wyatt calls her on stage, she’s so shocked, completely petrified to take the stage. But she turns and looks at the two people she loves and adores and cares about: her daughter and Luke. I think what’s so wonderful [is] We can only hope to find a partner in our life who truly sees us, appreciates us, and appreciates all the wonderful things that we sometimes can’t even see in ourselves. That’s what I love so much about your daughter, but also about Luke. He sees her and encourages her, and he’s the one who really pushes Melody to take stock, to stop for a second and say, “Hey, you’ve got something really special, and you gotta love yourself and believe in it.” . . you can do it because we all believe in you. And now we need you to believe in yourself and become brilliant.
Melody definitely shone when she took the stage and proved that she truly has star power as she stood up to her feet while singing with Lindsay like an established country superstar in the when Christmas was young world. Karen David likened the moment to what happens in real life on a popular competitive show:
It felt like a moment from America’s Got Talent. You know, when you see this character walking on stage and going, ‘Oh my God, I’m on stage in front of all these people. And you really want to cheer him up. You said, ‘Yeah, yeah, do it! That is fine. Melody, go shine! It was such a magical moment, especially with a song that came with such an emotional attachment to her mother, and her love for her mother and celebrating the mother-daughter relationship and seeing her father in the audience, and her best friends and the people who love behind the scenes. I couldn’t hope for a better ending than that. [laughs] I’m like, ‘Wow, I just want this happy ending with everything in my life right now. [laughs] It was so magical.
if it were America has talentI know I would have rung the golden bell for Melody Douglass! The NBC competition show often spotlights singers, and one of them is on his way to winning the most recent season. Melody had her star moment on stage to catch up on her dream before the big kiss with Luke ensured this Christmas movie included more than happy endings in the final moments, and what better way to wrap up a Christmas movie ?
