Since the release of James Cameron Titanic in 1997, Kate Winslet became a huge star in her own right. Yet audiences will always remember her for her heartbreaking portrayal of Rose, who falls in love with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson aboard a doomed, colossal cruise ship. One scene in particular always seems to come to mind for the audience, in which Rose asks Jack to paint a nude portrait of her “like one of her French daughters.” The scene has become iconic and seems to keep up with the actress even as she moves on to bigger and better things. Unfortunately, this led to some awkward moments, including one moment where her son’s classmate recognized her from the stage.
Appearing as a guest on the UK show The Graham Norton Show, the Easttown mare The star recalled a moment when his daughter’s classmate told him about the scene, recalling the famous nude scene of Titanic. Winslet detailed:
My daughter had it in school. He was quite strange. She said someone approached her after finding out after four years of being together in school that I was her mother. And he said ‘Oh my God, I saw your mother’s breast!’
While slightly embarrassing, this is a perfectly innocent comment from a child who was probably too young to understand the context of the scene. I’m sure this may seem strange for a child to understand, even if it’s perfectly normal for actors. It’s an absolutely hilarious anecdote and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something Winslet is often asked about. The phrase “paint me like one of your French girls” has practically taken root in popular culture.
It’s not the only scene Titanic that has impressed audiences over the years. The debate as to whether Jack could have walked through that door with Rose (which ultimately would have saved his life) is ongoing. Recently, James Cameron himself did an experiment to see if the two romantic leads could easily fit into the makeshift raft. Furthermore, the many dangerous yet revolutionary practical effects of the amount of water used to sink the ship made the film timeless. And, of course, who can forget DiCaprio shouting “I’m the king of the world” from atop the ship? It remains one of my favorite moments.
Kate Winslet was clearly eager to get back in the water with James Cameron as she plays a vital supporting role in the director’s latest film, Avatar: The Path of Water. He recently broke Tom Cruise’s record for longest time an actor held his breath underwater. The sheer number of challenging water-focused scenes in the film seem to rival it Titanic. Fortunately, Winslet was prepared, knowing full well what it’s like to be in a Cameron film.
