Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio joke became “scary” for young actor Gregory Mann

Nicknames from your friends and colleagues can become the kind of jokes that create funny and fond memories. Actor Gregory Mann can attest to this, since his work in new movie release Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro gave the young actor quite a backstory when it came to the Oscar-winning director. While a banter between the two helped build Mann’s performance as the titular wooden boy, it led to a recurring concern.

Sit down with Gregory Mann during the Netflix (opens in a new tab) On press day for the studio’s animation award nominee, I had to inquire about a story I came across during my research for the film. According to the story, the young man needed to relax during some of his recording sessions Pinocchioand Guillermo del Toro knew exactly what was needed to get the job done. Using his playful nature to his advantage, del Toro would tell Mann to call him a jerk whenever he felt he needed a little nudge.

Apparently that would have worked, as Gregory Mann was going to do just that, which put him quite at ease to deliver his performance. But as the young star told me during her interview with Gossipify, she dropped a recurring line that got him thinking:

It’s actually very stressful, because I’m a bit scared. If he calls me “idiot” at first, then I know I can call him that, because whenever I see him, it’s obviously a long time between film festivals. But then the actual filming had been wrapped up for some time. So first I have to make sure he calls me an idiot, because if I call Guillermo del Toro an idiot and he forgets the line, then I’m in trouble.

Imagining a scenario where you accidentally call Guillermo del Toro a fool when he’s unaware of the joke sounds absolutely like a recipe for anxiety. The man behind movies like Pan’s labyrinththe hell boy duology and Winner of the best film of 2018 the shape of water he is so respected and loved in the industry that being able to call him is a double-edged sword. It probably just adds to the jittery energy of the moment when you consider it. Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro problem saw Gregory Mann in his first major film role.

To sum up, Mann was playing the lead role in another adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s famous fairy tale, directed by a man whose name appears directly in the title. And that same project saw circumstances encourage him to call Guillermo del Toro a fool on a recurring basis. With all that pressure, however, the director’s trick worked, because Gregory Mann’s performance worked Pinocchio it’s a brilliant delight, while nailing the more serious moments.

Walking the line between joy and horror, as del Toro has always been known, Netflix’s adaptation of this time-tested story is a wonderfully darker twist than Disney’s renditions . So it’s more important than ever to gauge the performance of these kinds of killer talents with a film like this. Which now begs the question, did anyone else in the cast even call Guillermo del Toro a fool while they were shooting their roles?

Depending on the quality Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro finished with the awards corps for the rest of this year’s cycle, we could see Gregory Mann and Guillermo del Toro reunite again on Oscar night. If so, you can bet this topic will be on the table and hopefully, we get to see them laugh together; which may or may not be because they greeted each other with the crazy nickname.

In the meantime, if you try to see Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toroyou would not be deceived. In other words, as long as you have an asset Netflix subscription on the streaming device of your choice.
