For almost a decade (more if you count those of 2010) Alice in Wonderland), Disney has been in tears with its live-action remakes of classic animated films in its library. Pinocchio released exclusively to Disney + subscribers this week and next year will see the arrival of The little Mermaid, the next remake to be released in theaters. We already have our first trailer for this release. The little Mermaidand watch Halle Bailey’s version of Ariel singing a classic song from the 1989 original.
As befits a trailer, this first look at The Little Mermaid doesn’t delve into what to expect from the story, albeit unlike the retelling as Pernicious Yes cruel, The little Mermaid will play the main narrative rhythms of its animated predecessor. Instead, we dived underwater and visited a familiar wreck that fans of the original have Mermaid will recognize. Yes, let’s take a look at Halle Bailey’s Ariel stumbling upon trinkets of the human world with her friend Flounder, then head back to her hideout where she keeps her prizes. So, of course, you can guess which song we heard Bailey’s Ariel sing at the end of the trailer: “Part of Your World,” which we first heard Jodi Benson sing over three years ago.
Aside from a quick look at Flounder and some sea turtles, Ariel is the only character to appear in this first trailer for The little Mermaid. It makes sense that the next trailer will show Eric, Ursula, King Triton, and Sebastian, but given that the next film is eight months away, it’s hard to say when the next look will arrive. However, for anyone who grew up watching Disney, it’s weird. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it too The little Mermaid The remake will also include new songs that returning singer-songwriter Alan Menken co-wrote with producer Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Speaking of talent, Halle Bailey (who appeared in the first four seasons of Adult with sister Chloe) joins the cast of the live-action remake of The little Mermaid by Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jude Akuwudike as Grimsby, Lorena Andrea as Pearl and Kajsa Mohammar as Karina, this last two are new characters. The Return of Mary PoppinsRob Marshall will direct from a screenplay written by Jane Goldman and David Magee. Principal photography began in late January 2021 and wrapped in July of that year, with Bailey commemorating the completed shoot with a look at his version of Ariel.
