Danny Elfman is the man behind some truly iconic soundtracks like Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton Batman and Sam Raimi Spiderman movie. He is also the man behind it The Simpsons theme. It’s safe to say that he has an incredibly impressive resume and is more than ready to take on any musical challenge. Well, his latest project turned out to be his biggest challenge as he made an entire TV series for the first time. However, it wasn’t just a series, it composed the soundtrack to the mega-hit Wednesday a show that has gone viral on TikTok for its music, outfits and more.
Elfman scored many Tim Burton’s work so it made perfect sense that he was the man behind the musical magnificence of Wednesday. However, the successful series proved quite a challenge for the legendary composer, as he was expected to make far more music than he would for a single film. In an interview with indiewire Elfman spoke of the difficulty of composing Wednesday I was saying:
I brought a partner, Chris Bacon, to work with me because he had never done TV episodes. I was afraid there would be a somewhat overwhelming learning curve. And it was. It’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before, it’s about delivering full soundtracks, almost as long as a movie soundtrack, every 10 days.
Between Elfman and Chris Bacon, the two have composed 48 songs for the Wednesday soundtrack to accompany pre-existing tracks such as The Cramps’ “Goo Goo Muck” (the song behind Wednesday’s viral dance moves) . Time Jenna Ortega worked on nods to classic Wednesday Through her acting, dance, and costume design, Elfman has also worked subtly Addams family references in the score.
He explained that while he has worked with Burton in the past on pre-existing intellectual property, such as Batman Yes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the director didn’t want clues about the film’s original scores. However, for Wednesday, they couldn’t help but give a little nod to classic snaps from the Addams family theme. Elfman explained that although the soundtrack was difficult to produce:
There has never been an easier theme piece to pay homage to.
With Iconic Wednesday fashion The amazing cast of Addams family divided, and gothic settings, Elfman’s score contributed to an aesthetically pleasing show that also paid homage to its utterly bizarre predecessor.
I’d say that while it proved difficult for Elfman, it was worth it. Their cello-laden opening credits and the gruesome score he created with Bacon fit Wednesday perfectly, and really add to the incredibly unique vibe that is Wednesdays world.
