‘Star Wars’: Rian Johnson defends the ‘silly humor’ of ‘The Last Jedi’

The director continues to defend his vision of Star Warsfive years after the release of his movie, which still divides fans.

Five years after its premiere, episode VIII of Star Wars, the last jedi, continues to divide fans of the saga. On the occasion of the premiere of his new film glass oniondirector Rian Johnson has wanted to respond to critics, who blame him for “stupid humour” in certain scenes.

In an interview with QGthe filmmaker defended his vision of the franchise by specifying that “slightly cheesy humor” has always been an important element of Star Wars since its first installment released in 1977:

“Those who think that a little silly humor has no place in the universe of Star Wars I have not seen return of the jedi. There is literally a scene where Han Solo is hanging from a spit and [souffle sur le feu pour l’éteindre].”

“Everyone has a different vision”

Inside the last jedi, a humorous scene is discussed in which Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) does not take threats from General Hux (Domnhall Gleeson) seriously. Like the one where Luke (Mark Hamill) drinks green milk that he gets from a space creature.

“For me, everything in the film corresponds to Star Wars. And everything I put in the film is what I’ve always liked in Star Wars. Everyone has a different vision,” says Rian Johnson.

“I know for some fans, Star Wars it’s something serious like bat Man“, adds the director. “But this light-hearted, quite self-aware humor is part of Star Wars. [Mais mon] the movie is still serious. This balance is true to Star Wars.”

Released in 2017, the last jedi It is the third film in the intergalactic franchise produced by Disney. The film, which featured the return of Luke Skywalker, was a huge box office success, grossing $1.3 billion.
