Avengers: Endgame director teases TikTok with MCU fans still reeling from Black Widow’s death

“You can’t please everyone.” It’s a common and true aphorism: just ask any director of any popular film. While you may do something that the vast majority of people appreciate, there will always be critics and dissenters expressing their displeasure. In case of Avengers endingthe second highest-grossing film of all time, an ongoing complaint filed by co-director Joe Russo concerns the death of Scarlett Johansson, aka Black Widow, by Natasha Romanoff… but it has a special message for those who are still shocked by the fate of the hero: he plays the smallest violin in the world.

Earlier this month, Russo used the TIC Tac account of his production company, AGBO Films, to record a message for Marvel fans who are upset that Black Widow sacrificed herself in Avengers ending. Three and a half years after the blockbuster’s release, the director seems to be done with all kinds of endearing responses. A banner reads “I will never forgive you for killing Natasha!” and sports a sarcastic frown as he rubs his middle and forefinger against his thumb. You can watch the video below:

It’s pretty brutal – the message was made clearer by using Eminem’s “Stan” as the soundtrack – but it’s understandable at this point. One can imagine Joe Russo recording comments similar to what he puts in quotes every day (an unfortunate aspect of life in the age of social media), and it stands to reason that he’s reaching a breaking point in the tolerant.

He, co-director Anthony Russo and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely made what they think was a fitting creative choice with Black Widow in Avengers ending – the character who sacrifices himself for the benefit of the titular team’s mission – and of course it doesn’t matter at this point if you’re not a fan of that calling. Specifically, his sympathy for your distress about this can be marked by an invisible and inaudible stringed instrument.

Also, if your curiosity is piqued by the mention of “raw footage” in the caption, the AGBO account provided the video in a follow-up post, where Russo is seen silently addressing himself and adapting his expression and rub her fingers:

For those who can forgive Joe Russo for Black Widow’s fate in the 2019 blockbuster, all of the Russo siblings and Scarlett Johansson’s collaborations can currently be viewed with a Disney+ subscription, titles included Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America Civil War, Avengers: Infinity WarYes Avengers ending. And if you can’t get over Natasha’s death in the latest Infinity Saga film, you can still enjoy the character’s Phase 4 solo movie, available on the same streaming service.

We’ll have to wait and see if Scarlett Johansson ever returns to the MCU, but for now, you can follow everything that’s happening with the franchise with our guides on upcoming Marvel movies and upcoming TV movies.
