Last week, former Top Gear car show host Jeremy Clarkson wrote in the columns of the Sun that she dreamed of the day when Meghan would have to “parade naked through the streets of every city in the UK, while the crowds chanted ‘Shame!’ and throw excrement at it.”
The newspaper said on Friday it regretted the publication of the text, which it removed from its website and archives, saying it was “sincerely sorry.” “The fact that The Sun has not contacted the Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows her intentions. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt,” a spokesperson for Harry and Megan reacted this Saturday.
“While the public fully deserves the title’s regret for its dangerous words, we would not be in this situation if The Sun were not continually profiting from and exploiting hate, violence and misogyny,” the spokesperson added.
“Awkward Reference”
The disputed article led to a record number of complaints (more than 20,000) to the British press regulator and numerous condemnations from public figures. Jeremy Clarkson, in response, invoked “a clumsy reference to Game of Thrones.”
“Many people took it the wrong way. I am appalled that I have caused so much pain and I will be more careful in the future,” he wrote.
In one of Game of Thrones’ most defining sequences, a female character undergoes a “walk of shame,” in which she’s forced to wander the streets naked while people throw trash at her.
