Cinema: for the first time in 33 years, no French film tops the box office in 2022

In 2022, the top 10 most-watched movies in theaters are dominated by American blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Path of Water Where minions 2.

This is the first time since 1989: no French production is in the top 10 of the most viewed films in theaters this year. According to the latest figures from the CNC, disseminated by various media, it is the American blockbusters that triumph at the French box office in 2022.

While the country’s darkrooms are struggling to regain their pre-Covid-19 pandemic attendance, viewers have favored big franchises like Top Gun: Maverick that leads the ranking with 6.6 million entries or the new Avatar: The Path of Water (4.5 million), but released only last December.

Next in the ranking minions 2, jurassic world, black panther 2 and third of fantastic animals.

The first French film in 11th place

In 2021 several French films such as Kaamelott: Part One, Les Tuches 4 Where CAV North -also directed by Cédric Jimenez- had managed to rise to the top 10 at the box office.

But this year, the first French film occupies this time the 11th position. Is about What have we all done to God? third film in the saga directed by Philippe de Chauveron with Christian Clavier and Chantal Lauby which was seen by 2.4 million viewers.

This feature film is closely followed in the ranking by November by Cédric Jimenez (12th place) and Simone, the trip of the century (13th place) with 2.3 million entries each.

November, the best month of 2022 for French cinema

But if we expand the box office analysis further, the finding is less alarming for French cinema: of the 56 films that have exceeded 500,000 admissions, 26 are French, another 26 American and the remaining four are from other origins (Japan, Spain …).

However, French productions achieved 27.2 million tickets in total compared to 54.5 million tickets sold for US productions.

These figures from the CNC come to light when cinema attendance, which experienced its record low in 40 years in September 2022, is slowly picking up: with 14.78 million tickets in November, the theaters obscure the French sign its best month of the year.

If this attendance is still higher than that registered in 2021, it is still a long way from the pre-Covid one, since French cinemas only add 133.88 million tickets sold in 2022, that is, 29.9% less than in the same period of 2019, before the pandemic.
