Death of Elizabeth II: Jane Birkin, who met her several times, greets an “impeccable”

The British singer confides in the ‘Parisian’ her memories with the monarch and pays tribute to her, while greeting the first steps of King Charles III.

Like many Britons, singer Jane Birkin was devastated by the death of Elizabeth II. Since the disappearance of the monarch, which occurred this Thursday at the age of 96, the artist has camped “in front of her television (…), without stopping”, as she confesses to the Parisian. Beyond her attachment to her home country of England, Charlotte Gainsbourg’s mother had the honor of meeting the Queen on several occasions:

“The first time was in the lace factory of my grandfather and my uncle,” he recalls in the columns of the newspaper.

“Since I was the only girl in the family, I had to give her a bouquet of flowers. I saw her again during the presentations of the Agatha Christie films in which I acted, murder in the sun, death on the nileand during the centenary of the Entente Cordiale France-England, in 2004″.

“(His death) moves me a lot,” he explains to the Parisian, praising the Queen’s “sharp humour”. “What is absolutely charming is the devotion that people had for her person and her humor (…) In difficult times, like Covid, she always knew how to find the words to reassure us. Also with the Commonwealth caring for people. In fact, it was not her fault.”

The new king “will do very well”

And a few words for the new King Charles III, who presented her with the medal of the Order of the British Empire when he was still a prince, and who according to her “will do very well”:

“His first speech was very good, he thought of everyone, his son Harry. And then all this crowd in front of Buckingham who wished him success. He’s already done a lot of good things, for ecology or the Prince’s Trust for young people.” people.”

a country with problems

The disappearance of the Queen has plunged the United Kingdom into a period of national mourning. Citizens flocked to the castles of Balmoral, the place of her death, Windsor and Buckingham to deposit gifts there.

Many events are planned according to a precise protocol until the funeral of Elizabeth II, which will take place on September 19 at Westminster Abbey. She will then rest in Windsor Castle, and more precisely in the King George VI Memorial, a vault where her parents and her sister Margaret rest.
