This is one last unknown that Queen Elizabeth II left after her death last Thursday. As the world prepares to pay its last respects to the sovereign at her funeral next Monday, a handwritten letter addressed to the citizens of Sydney is hidden in a building in the city. But this one must not be opened before… 2085!
Australians will therefore have to wait 63 years to hear the monarch’s message, our colleagues at the daily mail.
It was during a trip to Australia in November 1986 that the British sovereign wrote a message after major restoration work on the Queen Victoria building. It is a building that dates back to the 19th century and that reopened its doors on the occasion of the queen’s visit.
“Choosing a suitable day for the year 2085”
This time capsule is framed in a display case in a public restricted area of the building. Only the monarch’s instructions are visible. “The strict instruction is not to open it before 2085,” specifies the British newspaper.
The letter is addressed to “The Right Honorable Lord Mayor of Sydney”. The only restriction for the future mayor, “to choose an appropriate day for the year 2085, please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them,” Elizabeth II had written.
What could contain this mysterious message? Impossible to know at the moment, not even the monarch’s staff knows what she wrote there. So Australians will have to be patient for a long time. By then, George, the grandson of the new King Charles III, will surely be sitting on the throne of the British monarchy.
