The Duchess of Sussex said ‘there have also been concerns and conversations about the darkness of her skin’, which has led to public allegations of racism within the royal family. Prince Harry said during this 60 minutes interview with anderson cooper who believe these conversations were not “based on racism” but were the result of “unconscious bias”. Harry explained (via CBS News ):
But I think you’re talking to most, maybe not all, but most mixed race couples around the world, that the white side of the family would be wondering, whether they’re talking about it openly or with each other, what’s going on on your children do? it seems. The keyword here was ‘concern’ as opposed to ‘curiosity’, but the way the British press did it, that wasn’t what it was.
Prince Harry declined to discuss the alleged conversations with undisclosed family members, but described the backlash in the British press as “a manhunt for the real racist”. He and Meghan Markle, whose mother is black, confirmed it wasn’t the late Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Philip who brought up Archie’s skin color.
The Duke of Sussex expanded on his thoughts on the difference between racism and unconscious bias in an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby, and Prince Harry said (via american weekly ):
So again, going back to the difference between what I understand from my experience, the difference between racism and unconscious bias, the two are different. But once it has been recognized to you, or made known to you as an individual or institution, that you have an unconscious bias, you have the opportunity to learn and grow from this to be part of the solution, rather than part of it. of the problem.
Following the claims made in Oprah’s explosive interview, the the royal family released a statement , noting that some of the allegations made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were troubling, “particularly that of race”. The family said the issues raised were “taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family in private”.
