Top Gun: nonconformist it was as big a hit as anyone could have imagined. While it’s not technically the highest-grossing film of 2022, it’s still one of the highest-grossing films of all time worldwide. For so many fans who thought they’d never see the best weapon sequel, the movie is a big deal, and we all have director Joseph Kosinki to thank for convincing Tom Cruise to make the movie.
Although Tom Cruise has publicly expressed interest in making a upper barrel 2 Kosinski has long told Deadline that, especially after the suicide of Tony Scott, the director of the original film, Cruise really needed convincing. That didn’t stop Kosinski from pitching his idea for a Cruise sequel. The manager explains…
Tom really didn’t want to do another Top Gun and [director Tony Scott’s suicide] this made it even less likely. I’m sure for him this is probably another reason why he would never consider returning. But he pitched the idea that this story was a reconciliation between him and the Rooster as opposed to this mission that raises the Rooster in this very perilous situation, that he will end up crossing enemy lines, trying to resolve his differences and working together to get back at home
It seems that what Tom Cruise needed was a reason to make a sequel. Specifically, he needed a story that he felt would give the Maverick character a reason to return to the screen. This idea, building the film around the relationship between Maverick and Goose’s son Rooster, played by Miles Teller, was apparently the spark that lit a fire inside Cruise. Still, Kosinski says Cruise was well aware of the scale of what was at stake. Kosinsky continued…
As soon as I pitched this idea I could see the wheels in Tom’s head start turning and suddenly he had a very emotional reason, a hook to go back to that character and a reason to come back, because I believe in his spirit, it was like a one in a million chance we could get it right. He kept saying, “Joe, we gotta hit a ball with a ball.” And that was his line in this film. And so, I definitely felt it in my head every day as we made the movie. I think everyone who worked on this film felt that the bar was very high because we were all fans of the original.
best weapon it is one of the most popular films ever made. Fans have been waiting decades for a sequel. Tom Cruise seems to have realized that making a good enough movie wasn’t enough. They had to match or surpass the success of the first film, and there was a way to ensure that they would be successful no matter how good the story. We know how much work they put into it DissidentThe jet action is perfect.
Yet somehow they absolutely “hit a bullet with a bullet” and they did Top Gun: nonconformist everything it should be. Fans love it, critics love it. It grossed nearly $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office and, to top it off, Dissident it could end up winning major awards as many think it’s a film we could see at the Oscars.
