Warning: spoilers ahead for the series premiere of The way back in the hallmark.
by Hallmark The way back It’s just one episode and already combines the family drama of mothers and daughters trying to heal old wounds with time travel decades into the past. Three generations of Landry women come together under one roof for the first time with teenager Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) hiding a big time-traveling secret from her mother Kat (Chyler Leigh) and her grandmother mother Del (Veteran feature Andie MacDowell ) in the dark so far. The cast spoke to Gossipify about how the show has struck a balance.
After Kat lost her job following the collapse of her marriage, she decided to try to make amends with her estranged mother in Canada, bringing her teenage daughter Alice (who had never met Del before) on a fresh start. Alice was not thrilled to leave her father, her friends and everything she knew in the United States to move to her grandmother’s farm. When Kat revealed that she and Alice’s father weren’t getting back together, the teenager snapped… and accidentally discovered the ability to travel through time to the 1990s to interact with younger versions of mom and grandmother, who didn’t. I have no idea who she is. .
At the end of the series premiere, Alice was still stuck in her 90s and was looking for help. According to the cast, there will be plenty of family drama in the present to accompany Alice’s adventures in the past. Sadie Laflamme-Snow explained how her character tries to balance family ties (or lack thereof) in the present and time spent with the teenage mom-to-be, saying:
Being able to travel through time adds a layer of complexity to her current relationships, as Alice doesn’t tell anyone where she is when she’s not at home. The way she stumbles upon this opportunity to go back and meet her teenage mother and see her grandmother before tragedy struck her family, and there’s the mysterious disappearance of Kat’s brother. It’s hard because once Alice knows that this real happiness and warmth and love existed in her family in the past, that’s all she wants for now.
Talk about a big secret to hide right after moving to a new place, without many people to trust! Alice knew next to nothing about her mother’s side of the family, except that she had lost her brother many years before her. On her first trip in the ’90s, she met not only a young Kat and a young Del, but also the boy who would have been her uncle had he grown up, and her music-loving grandfather. So can she bring into the present the love that she sees in her family’s past? Sadie Laflamme-Snow continues:
Without being able to directly say: ‘Hey, in 1999 we were like this. What is happening? What is wrong here and how can we fix it? She’s on a mission to make that happen and find a way to be with her mother and grandmother in the present.
Will Alice try to make changes to the past to make sure whatever destroyed the family in the ’90s never happens, or will she just try to use what she learns to try and fix Kat and Del’s relationship in the present? Only time will tell, and The way back Luckily, she’s received a ten-episode first season order, which means plenty of time for the twists and turns of the Landry women’s stories.
Of course Kat doesn’t know all the twists yet, with Alice missing at the end of episode 1 and her daughter keeping it a secret once she returns. Chyler Leigh, who also shared how she is able to do this to make Kat and Alice’s relationship so “believable”, he wondered how Kat would deal with Alice keeping the secret:
Well, there are times where Alice reveals or says something and Kat says, “How do you know? Did I tell you this story? Did I tell you what happened? Like, she was like, ‘You were such a loving family.’ What happened?’ And it’s that sense in Kat’s mind where you go, ‘Yeah, I mean, we really were, but why are you suddenly bringing all this up and talking about it?’ And do it compassionately, and really fiercely in a way trying to make that point clear, while I still kind of disagree.
Apparently, Alice can’t help but hint that she has first-hand knowledge of what the Landry family was like decades ago. After all, the premiere proved that Del had most of the signs of what her life was like before she lost her son and her husband, and before her daughter moved on. There may not be many ways for Alice to find excuses as to why she knows what she will know! Chyler Leigh, who joined The way back What his first major TV project after super girl monitoring:
[Kat’s] like, “Okay, you just said how hard everything is for you and I’m trying to communicate and try to make things better.” So it’s almost like where does this change of heart take place? Kat has no idea it’s because Alice met the teenage version of Kat and they became best friends with her. It was very interesting to see how they develop the relationship and how they connect or not at the moment.
No matter how long it takes Kat and Del to figure out Alice’s secret to time travel (if ever), I think we can keep them from immediately guessing that Alice is visiting the ’90s across a pond to make friends. of her mother of her teenager of her. The way back bringing a touch of time travel to the family unit and the drama already sets it apart from other options of the TV show 2023 .
