Chicago Police has delivered a number of groundbreaking twists in season 10 thus far, ranging from departure of Jesse Lee Soffer as Halstead to adding Torres as a new intelligence member to turn the unit against Sean O’Neal. Now the focus turns to Upton after spending the first half of the season grappling with her husband’s absence and Sean’s intrusion, and director Gia-Rayne Harris has been candid about preparing for PShis experience working with Tracy Spiridakos and Jefferson White, and more!
Gia-Rayne Harris came Chicago Police as part of NBCUniversal’s Female Forward program, which brings female directors to scripted television to cover and then direct an episode of the same season. She spoke to Gossipify ahead of her episode, titled “I Can Let You Go,” which airs Jan. 18, and talked about preparing to host a show that already has nine full seasons:
I was able to watch all episodes before making mine except season 10. I read all before mine. It’s been really important to me to understand each character’s arc up to this point, and I guess I could have read some sort of synopsis, but I wanted to understand the style of the show. Luckily, I was able to learn sets this way. I was able to figure out where they were going and get a feel for where I might be playing.
What better way to get behind the camera on a show approaching 200 episodes than to watch everything that was available? Fans have the option to do this with a peacock subscription , of course, but without the added factor of realisation. Harris shared that she has been able to keep up PS director Chad Saxton in episode 5, entitled “Pink Cloud”, and guest director John Hyams in episode 10, who was a significant compensation for Torres titled “This Work”. After Twice gave him “two totally different directing experiences” before taking the reins on episode 12.
“Pink Cloud” was actually the episode that featured Jefferson White as Sean O’Neal and put Tracy Spiridakos’ Hailey Upton in his obsessive search for evidence to put him behind bars, so it lines up with the Gia-Rayne Harris episode Chicago Police will examine its dynamics. They Push forward for “I Can Let You Go” reveals that Sean at least hasn’t let go of what happened in the first half of the season, which doesn’t bode well for Upton. The director shared her experience working with Spiridakos and White:
Working with Tracy and Jefferson has been a true dream. They’re both heavyweights overall as an actor, but they’re also the nicest people you’ll ever meet. They challenge each other and challenge each other. But they also challenged me to be better and more present. I couldn’t have asked for a better first start. Honestly, I would for years and years to come.
Working with both actors was a good enough experience for Gia-Rayne Harris to describe them as “the nicest people,” but the same certainly can’t be said for Sean O’Neal as a character or feelings. . she nearly leaves him to die in the winter finale. Of course, yellow stone it shows that Jefferson White has a lot of reach as an actor in addition to a villain like Sean , and Upton’s arc in recent seasons has brought great performances from Spiridakos. The director commented on how different the two actors are in his film. PS personages:
It’s actually quite wild. He’s really worrying. [laughs] Jefferson is especially the sweetest person. He is the kindest person and then he can turn it on. The moment you say action, he’s ready to play. what a star
Well, it’s really nice to know that Jefferson White is “the nicest person,” when PS showrunner Gwen Sigan played Sean as “one of the worst villains we’ve ever had on the show”. At the very least, after ten seasons of investigating the worst of the Windy City! How much of Sean will appear in the second half of season 10 remains to be seen. After all, he survived filming the winter finale, so the new Jan. 18 episode may shed more light on his Chicago Police future.
So how did Gia-Rayne Harris land on NBC’s hit show and then come on board to direct? She spoke to NBCUniversal’s Female Forward, saying that she “hadn’t even dropped out of film school in a year” when she got the chance to come to PS, describing it as “preposterous in the best way”. He shared:
Female Forward has a standard online app and I’m someone who likes throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. I was coming out of film school and I was thinking, ‘What am I going to do now?’ So I applied on a whim and wasn’t even sure I had a chance. But I’ve applied and been able to be interviewed several times, and here I am.
Harris went to film school after being out of college for several years and PS brought it to primetime in a big way. She entered the entertainment industry with experience directing short films that have screened at festivals and over 70 short films that she wrote, directed and starred in on her own. You can now add scripted television directing to your credits list, and all the signs point to a must-see episode of Chicago Police.
