Spoilers for the last two episodes of new amsterdam on NBC, titled “The Right Place” and “How Can I Help?”
new amsterdam has officially finished , fittingly with an episode titled “How Can I Help?” and features doctors who band together and do whatever they can to save a mother’s life. They made the operation nearly impossible, at the cost of Max not being able to take Luna to the Mermaid Parade before moving to Geneva to take a job at the World Health Organization. The series didn’t end with Max asking a whole new crowd how he could help, but there was one talk from Goodwin: A surprise flash-forward revealed the grown-up Luna as Amsterdam’s new medical director!
Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke to Gossipify about the surprise ending and a Max moment that didn’t make it to the finale. Young Luna spent most of the episode angry at her father for not taking her to the mermaid parade, until she finally explained that everyone had to get together to save Mommy from someone. She had promised her that she would never remember that day anyway, but after all she wasn’t like that. This would be the day she realized she wanted to be a doctor, leading to a final scene of an adult Luna taking over her father’s former position as chief physician.
David Schulner, who also co-wrote the series finale, explained how the show arrived at Luna’s adult reveal in the finale, saying:
Before we started Season 5, we knew this would be our last season, which is both a gift and a curse, right? You don’t want to be canceled, but the best way to cancel is to know about it and be able to plan for it. So my 11-year-old daughter at breakfast one morning said, “What if Luna comes back as medical director when she’s older?” And I was like, ‘Okay, 11-year-old girl, let me write, please.’ I was like, ‘That’s not going to happen, but thanks for your time.’
new amsterdam has been officially canceled in March 2022 , while season 4 was still airing. On the bright side, there was still a full season to go (albeit a shorter one than usual), with thirteen episodes to build to the finish. Apparently, the first person to take Luna’s adult shift was none other than David Schulner’s daughter. Not exactly a writer at age 11, Schulner wasn’t immediately involved, but she wasn’t the only one introducing that final scene. The EP continued:
Then, a week later, one of our writers, Laura Valdivia, sent me an email with the exact same ending. And I was like, ‘Okay, maybe I’ll think about it now. Then a week later I was on set with [writer] Erika Green, and she said, “Call me crazy, but what if at the end of the show Luna comes back as medical director?” So for three weeks, three different people presented me with the exact same ending and I was like, “I guess this is the end!” [laughs] It was taken from the ether.
If three people independently came up with the same ending, how could the executive producers choose differently? not surprising actor Jocko Sims described the conclusion of the series as “a wonderful ending that puts a beautiful, beautiful bond into this wonderful journey that we’ve been on.” Schulner continued:
It’s interesting because you end up where you start. We started with Max in this auditorium as the new medical director, so it made sense for someone else to take on that role.
It was inevitable that new amsterdam he would need a new medical director after it was revealed that Max was moving to Geneva. Few fans probably predicted that Max’s final scene would actually be just a quiet time with his daughter and that she would eventually get the final scene of the show. According to executive producer Peter Horton, Max’s last moment was making a decision:
In the end, the woman he chose was his daughter. He will be her father, in all the ways he knows he wants to be and should be for her. It’s the choice.
Though Max’s relationship with Wilder went well and he even achieved a degree of closure about his former romance with Helen , there was only one person he could prioritize above all others: his daughter. The finale ended before revealing what her life is like after leaving New York, but I like to imagine that she included at least one mermaid parade.
Of course, Max’s final scene with Wilder left the door open for him to potentially return one day, and there were no hard feelings he left behind. If he ever really did, that’s a blank new amsterdam it just didn’t compile. When I asked the executive producers if there was an answer as to whether or not he’s back, David Schulner said:
I know what I’m thinking. We actually shot an ending that more directly pointed the arrow to one conclusion or another, but it’s so much better if the audience can participate in it.
There was an ending that would have shed more light on Max’s future beyond his departure from New Amsterdam as medical director, but it was ultimately cut. According to Schulner, letting viewers figure out their own storyline works better than coming up with a hard answer one way or the other. Peter Horton shared another benefit of not answering all questions definitively:
It’s also a subtle message to the network if you ever want to bring it back. [laughs]
new amsterdam had a happy ending to accompany the series finale. gabriela has decided stay in New York with Reynolds , and fans got to see the whole family reunited, looking much happier than in the previous flashback. Iggy and Martin remarried, realizing Tyler Labine’s high hopes for their relationship. Bloom reunited with her sister at an NA meeting after gaining a better understanding of the new life (and new apartment) she wants to build. Daniel Dae Kim also appeared. One Last Time as Dr. Cassian Shin !
Wilder’s future was a little less clear, but he seemed more or less at peace with Max’s decision. Also, while there hasn’t been enough time for the show to reveal much about Adult Moon, I think it’s safe to say that it won’t be. a medical director like Verónica Fuentes in season 4 .
As for himself new amsterdam Will I ever come back? bnc … well, fans can always wait. Ryan Eggold yes he already has a new TV show , so you won’t be away from the small screen for long.
