Jinger Duggar Says She Grew Up Surrounded By ‘Harmful’ Religious Teachings And How They Made Her ‘Terrified’ Of The World

(So how 17 children…) Jinger Duggar Vuolo is making headlines beyond the small screen as he prepares to unveil his new memoir, titled Becoming Truly Free: My Story of Unraveling Faith from Fear. The book will focus in part on the former reality star’s thoughts on her childhood abject fear of the religious teachings her famous parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, embraced.

For some time now, fans and supporters of the Duggar clan have probably taken notice of Jinger Duggar Vuolo’s approach to life and fashion by moving away from the more restrictive views of his parents. She (she’s gone from all skirts and dresses to rocker pants and wear shorts like it’s nothing .) talk to people Ahead of her memoir’s Jan. 31 release date, Vuolo spoke about distancing herself from the Institute in Basic Life Principles movement that her family has followed so devotedly, speaking about the fear she had as a child of many everyday things and activities. . , assuming they can defy God’s will. In her words:

Fear occupied an important place in my childhood. I thought I should wear skirts and dresses just to please God. Drum music, places I’ve been, or bad friendships can cause harm. . . . I thought I might die in a car accident on the road, because I didn’t know if God wanted me to stay home and read the Bible.

As hyperbolic as these completely out of context fears may seem, some children actually suffer from such daily apprehensions based largely on a desire to avoid one of God’s most painful reactions. Jinger Duggar Vuolo shared that family activities, like playing broomball, instilled fear of judgment from above, and only later did she realize how much the movement’s teachings were based on generating anxiety. Speaking of IBLP founder Bill Gothard, who was the church’s leader until he resigned in 2014 after facing dozens of sexual harassment and abuse allegations. (Jinger’s brother Josh Duggar, who has also faced sexual abuse charges, is currently in federal prison for child pornography and will need to register as a sex offender upon his release.)

He spoke negatively about the Gotthard ideology and how he distanced himself from it as of 2017. Here’s how he put it:

[Gothard’s] Simply put, the teachings are based on fear and superstition and leave you in a state where you feel like, “I don’t know what God wants from me. Fear crippled me with anxiety. I was terrified of the outside world. . . . His teachings have been so damaging and I see many effects on the lives of my friends and the people who grew up in this community with me. There are many cult trends.

Luckily for his state of mind, he was able to shift into a more positive stance which allowed him to turn his back on the ILBP completely. Of course, Vuolo remains committed to the Christian faith, albeit in a not-so-restrictive way (especially for women), and hopes to inspire others to follow his example.

Jinger Duggar Vuolo and her husband Jeremy Vuolo have been open to sharing more about their lives in recent years, both from counting on, their respective social media pages, YouTube videos or other places. The upcoming memoir was preceded by a 2021 release, Our hope: to find peace with God’s promises, which the couple co-wrote about their relationship and move across the country as well as the birth of their first daughter Felicity and subsequent miscarriage. (Which luckily was followed by Duggar Vuolo get pregnant with daughter no Evangeline, born November 2020.)
