Boy Meets World Writer talks about BTS’ “traumatic” and “divided” conflict at the beginning of the show

boy meets world It may have ended more than 20 years after the series finale in May 2000, but the stars have revisited it from the beginning for the benefit of fans. Sadly, not all past blowouts have revealed happy memories, and now a writer has opened up about her own behind-the-scenes experience that she describes as “divided” and “traumatic.” Writer Janette Kotichas shared her take on the tension between the co-creators that led to big changes for BTS between Seasons 1 and 2.

They beloved sitcom largely set in school was created by Michael Jacobs and April Kelly, but Kelly was only on board boy meets world for the first season. Janette Kotichas visited the Pod meets the world podcast hosted by former stars Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle (all contributed to being called “child actors” ) to release statements about what really went on behind the scenes that led to the early ejections of her and Kelly, among others. According to Kotichas, the writers room was split between “Michael’s camp and April’s camp”, and Kotichas was firmly on Kelly’s side.

Referring to “Michael’s camp” as “bad girls,” Kotichas then shared his thoughts on what happened all those years ago on the podcast, saying:

It was definitely divisive, but I hadn’t realized it. I didn’t know it would be so divided. There was a lot of sarcasm on the other side, and that’s okay. I mean, obviously I didn’t know they had that story about April that was the weird one. April is an amazing and very generous human being. I mean, I want to counter that because the boss villain has a lot of Disney stuff.

Janette Kotichas wasn’t entirely sure what she was getting into when she joined the team at boy meets world with tension between the two creators and their followers. The writer had nothing but good things to say about April Kelly, sharing a recollection as an example of why she stood by her:

Our PAs would come in around 4 or 5 and get ready for the night because that was the day they delivered a lot of scripts and they had to copy all the scripts or at least throw them out. above the copier. So they got up quite late in the evening and the bad girl didn’t buy them dinner. April takes out her note and says, “Give this to the kids and let them order dinner.” So she had a giving heart and she really saw something in us.

Kotichas was not a writer at the time, but he had the opportunity to pitch ideas and later wrote two episodes for the first season. These episodes were hailed by the cast as some of the best of the first season, especially ‘Boy II Mensa’ which was the sixth in the entire series, also wrote ‘Boy Meets Girl’ which aired as the penultimate episode of the first season.

That said, his experience writing his own episodes hasn’t been entirely smooth, and he credits Michael Jacobs with a disturbing incident while one of his scripts was in the works. Referring to the co-creators, Kotichas said:

They were going to give me notes on my script, and Michael just said, “I don’t even know what to say.” And he throws my script across the room and says, “It’s a blank sheet of paper.” And I’m just sitting there, like, ‘What?’ And April says, ‘Okay, Michael. It’s wonderful. Let’s sit down and go over the script and give notes to Janette. Let’s fix it’… It’s like, ‘I don’t even know what to say to this.’

The incident marked the writer clearly, as she was able to tell about it almost three decades after its first episode aired in 1993. However, she hoped to stay in boy meets world beyond the first season with the potential to become a writer, as suggested by April Kelly, although she wasn’t ready to celebrate when there was no contract. According to Kotichas, Kelly went on vacation to France after promising to give Michael Jacobs a list of writers to stay on board for season two, which she agreed to.

The writer said that while the co-creator was on vacation and Kotichas herself was cleaning up after season 1, this happened:

Cut to: We’ve been released and we’re not on the show. I sent a telegram to April in France at her hotel, saying, “We’ve been cut off.” And I’m sure your agent does too. They just cut us off… They didn’t bring us back… It was traumatic for me. I loved the show and I loved what we were doing with it. We were going slow.

Rider Strong replied that he had not heard the version of events in which April Kelly was eliminated, believing she left because she was “sick of the show and left because of politics”. The cast noted that there was a different tone in season 2 after season 1, and Danielle Fishel went on to say that they didn’t have Kelly’s version of events to confirm all the details of what Kotichas said.

That said, Fishel herself shared a story in 2022 about the harsh criticism she received from Michael Jacobs during her first week of boy meets world at the age of 12, inclusive is in danger of being fired . While it remains to be seen whether other sides to the story will be revealed as the stars continue to revisit their time on the show, it’s clear there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes that fans don’t know. it aired for the first time.

Actor Anthony Tyler Quinn has shared the story of how Michael Jacobs originally said he would return to continue playing Mr. Turner in Season 4. only to be cut two months later thanks to the network and to the studio. Actress Trina McGee, who played Angela Moore, spoke about “disrespectful” incidents on the set of boy meets world and opening of Maitland District about being “sexualized” like Rachel suggesting that Michael Jacobs and the writers enjoyed playing it.
