Lopez vs. Lopez Star Talks Wanting To Play ‘The Best TV Dad’ And Working With ‘Legend’ Stephen Tobolowsky For New Episode

Lopez versus Lopez arrived on NBC in the 2022-2023 television season as a new family sitcom, with the true father daughter duo of George Lopez and Mayan Lopez . The show was successful enough to get a full season order, and the new year will show a new side to Matt Shively’s Quinten when his father comes to town, plays to One day at a time alumnus stephen tobolowsky . Shively chatted with Gossipify about her goal to play TV’s best dad, what it was like working with Stephen Tobolowsky on their second show together and more.

While fans will need to tune into NBC’s new episode of Lopez versus Lopez On Jan. 20, to see how well Sam Van Bryan and George get along (or not), I chatted with Matt Shively about playing a super dad to Chance and Mayan’s sidekick on a sitcom. It turns out those qualities in Quentin go back to the early stages of the show, after filming the pilot and before filming the season. The actor shared:

I met with all the writers and we had a conversation about where we wanted to go with the character and what he was looking for. I said, “I’ve seen those sitcoms a million times, and I’ve seen all the parents on them and I want to be the opposite of what those parents are.” Most of the time he is playing dumb torpe who is not paying attention, who loves his children but at the same time todavia is muy obsessed with sí mismo and is absorbed in his own world and lives like quiere vivir, and asks me to make it in front of. I wanted to be empathetic and understanding and compassionate, and the person that Mayan and Chance could turn to for anything and could be heard and seen.

These qualities of empathy and compassion have made Quinten the punchline to some of George’s jokes, with Matt Shively quipping that his character is “the perfect punching bag, and I love being the punching bag.” Lopez versus Lopez He showed those qualities that make the character a great companion and father. If anything, Quinten living with George despite all the pranks is just another sign that he’s anything but, to quote Shively, “obsessed and self-centered.” The actor continued:

I basically pitched it as, “Listen, every trope, everything that sitcoms have done before with dads, I want to go against it and I want to do the opposite,” which worked so well because George still plays this character. This creates a great balance between the two different types of parents and allows everyone to learn from each other. But my main focus was just that I wanted to be the best TV dad that ever lived, when it comes to being there for his son and for his partner and for his family.

Quinten has stiff competition when it comes to claiming the title of ‘TV’s Best Dad’, facing Danny Tanner (played by the late Bob Saget ) Of Sold out and Uncle Phil (played by the late James Avery ) Of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, to name just two! They Lopez versus Lopez The character definitely stands out, as she’s younger than many sitcom dads and faces different kinds of challenges, which (so far) she’s managed to overcome. Matt Shively hasn’t revealed all the details on how his character will handle his father’s presence in town, but he did share how much the new episode means to him:

This episode is very special to me, because I feel like that was the episode where, halfway through, I watched it and was like, “Oh wow, we’re really getting there.” They took that note and followed it and made it a reality. I love that every time Quinten comes on screen, you love this guy, because he cares so much about his family and how they feel and what they do. I feel like that’s something that doesn’t happen very often in family comedies like this.

Who could be against a character who is always willing to put his family and loved ones first, usually with a smile on his face? It’s hard to say what he was like before becoming Chance’s father and Mayan’s partner, but his arrival as father to him will surely shed some light on how he became the man he is today.

And it turns out that working with Stephen Tobolowsky on Lopez versus Lopez This isn’t the first time Shively and Tobolowsky have appeared on the same show. When asked about his reaction to learning that Tobolowsky would be playing Sam Van Bryan, the actor explained the backstory:

It’s actually quite funny. One of the first shows I attended was True Jackson, VP, which was a Nickelodeon show 15 years ago. one of the other actors [was] Robbie Amell and Stephen Tobolowsky actually played her father on this show. So when I found out I was coming to play my dad on this show, he reminded me how crazy and weird it is to be an actor and how parenting basically changes from person to person. It’s a legend… When I found out who was the father, I thought, “Oh, there’s no one better,” and he was right. He was great.

After working on the same series more than a decade ago, the two actors share the screen again for Lopez versus Lopez! with curiosity, True Jackson, Vice President it actually featured several actors who would rise higher and higher from Nickelodeon. Plus Matt Shively earning his spot Lopez versus LopezRobbie Amell has pursued projects such as the people of tomorrow Yup the flash before the rider Download while Keke Palmer (who recently open on the interpretation of the protagonist True Jackson listen)) has appeared in major films, including cheaters and Jordan Peele Not.

Stephen Tobolowsky and George Lopez in Lopez Versus Lopez

And now Stephen Tobolowsky is recovering Lopez versus Lopez! With the next episode of Lopez versus Lopez With George, Sam, and Quinten as fathers, how do they compare as parents? While it’s a safe bet that George Lopez and Tobolowsky will have the sitcom experience to become a hilarious duo, Matt Shively predicted that what awaits the three men might not be all laughs. He shared:

Quinten had an example of what a good father is and what a bad father is, and he was able to learn from his father the things he didn’t want to be, and much more from his father the expectations of success and failure and everything. these things weigh much heavier on him than on George, who likes to go with the flow and really wasn’t there. [He’s] something like, “Whatever you want to do, do it.” Whereas Quinten’s father was much more like, “You have to become a very successful doctor, or a very successful architect” or something like that.

Quinten found a different kind of success than becoming a doctor or an architect, and he certainly didn’t follow through on the George’s own parenting journey , even with George working to be there for his family now. Matt Shively went on to say that after “Quiten became a father at 17,” fatherhood “became his job” of him. The actor explained:

His dream job ended up being a father and being able to shape what George was and what his father was and make sure he was the opposite of those things to make sure he was empathetic and compassionate and loving. and understanding and all those things. That’s cool, because in this episode, you’ll see three different styles of dads and eventually realize that the youngest of us has it the most. , and he can, in turn, be the best dad of the three.

How will the sitcom give parenting a twist by introducing Stephen Tobolowsky as Sam, while having the usual laughs? of the live studio audience ?
