The actress says she loves hearing her name pronounced in her native Australian lei because we do it differently in America.

speak Australia Today Plan (by daily mail ) Margot Robbie says she likes her name when it’s pronounced at home because the Australian way of pronouncing the name essentially omits the ‘r’ in Margot. Robby explains…

I also like hearing my name with an Aussie accent because in America everyone hits the ‘r’ like Mar-go. Here (is) Ma-go. It’s so special to be home.

Robbie spoke of hearing fans screaming his name when he attended the Australian premiere of his new film. Babylon. For her, it’s about the fact that hearing her name like that means she’s home. She says in the interview that Australia is important to her and she loves talking about her home and showing it to people who have never been there.

Technically speaking, no pronunciation can be called bad, it’s just the different nuances and different ways in which English has evolved as a language between the two different cultures. But of course Margot Robbie grew up hearing her name pronounced in an Australian accent, so for her it’s the “correct” way to do it, which is why she prefers that pronunciation to the American one. For what it’s worth, Robbie is Babylon Co-star Diego Calva mentions in the same interview that Mexican fans pronounce her name phonetically perfectly, which is why they hit both the “r” and “t” in Margot.

I’m not sure Margot’s Aussie pronunciation would even work with an American accent. There’s something about the Australian accent that certainly makes pronunciation feel natural. If people in the US started calling him “Ma-go,” I’m not sure that would work. Our accent isn’t cool enough.

It doesn’t seem like Margot Robbie necessarily has a problem with the American pronunciation of her name. It’s more like she knows the difference, so hearing the Aussie way of saying it connects her at home and she feels even more special.
