The following contains spoilers for the ending of Willow on Disney+.
Many original shows created for Disney+ based on existing franchises were ostensibly designed to be one-season experiences. Most Marvel shows haven’t seen additional seasons, and we don’t expect a second. Boba Fett book soon, even as the biggest franchises move forward. but the new Willow Not only has the show left the door open for season 2, but it has unveiled its plan that it wants season 3 as well.
In an end credits scene of the final episode of the first season, we see the book that opened each episode of the first season of Willow placed on a shelf. At this point we see that the spine is labeled “Volume I” and is placed next to two other books labeled “Volume II” and “Volume III”. While this may seem to indicate that more than Willow is coming to Disney+, no further seasons have been confirmed yet.
I had the opportunity to speak with Willow producer Jon Kasdan after the season 1 finale and asked him why he didn’t give the season a more definitive ending since there’s no guarantee he’ll be able to finish the story. He explained to her that this is only part of what makes the story compelling, saying…
It’s something in my stupid personality. It’s the same with Solo. I was very determined that Solo would end with that note of promise and the promise of a scene we’d like to see, which was those two boys entering Jabba’s palace and that first conversation. It’s just because I love these stories.
Willow His season could have had a more conclusive ending and more seasons could have been produced if Disney+ was interested, but apparently Jon Kasdan can’t help it. For him, part of the fun of writing these stories and being able to create new adventures for everyone from Han Solo to Willow is being able to tease audiences with the rest of the story. Of course, in the case of Alone, it didn’t really end up working.
As for why Jon Kasdan feels this way, we can apparently blame the ending on Christopher Nolan. Batman begins. Kasdan said the way the film led to its sequel was a great cinematic experience for him. He continued…
I don’t think I was more stunned than the moment at the end of Batman Begins when he flips that card over and says, “I’ll look at it.” I’ve gone crazy. With these kinds of stories, my instinct is always to put it at the end.
At this point, we really have no idea what the future holds. Willow on Disney+. Even Jon Kasdan admits he has no idea of the possibilities of having more seasons at this point. Fans will just have to wait and see, and possibly encourage others to watch the show before making up their minds.
